Politically, Hawaii is a very conservative place, thoroughly in love with the "old tried and true" ways of doing things. The definition of "old tried and true," though, dates back to the arrival of our current crop of US senators and such, who got into office a few years after Hawaii became a state. They adopted what was then-new cutting edge social thinking - and haven't changed their thinking since, despite documented failures of some of the social thinking of that time ... I'm a lifelong Democrat, despite the failures of the party and/or particular politicians within it. I'm also a fifth generation Californian.
