FOTD 30-04-02 (Frenetic [7])
FOTD -- April 30, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I'm actually nearing the point where I'll be able to say that the completion of the FOTD CD is within sight. My original hope was to have the disc ready for distribution sometime this summer. Considering the way things are going, I may actually make it and be back to an FOTD every day sooner than expected. Today's image illustrates a lively scene in the fractal that results when the rather confusing formula -1(Z)-(1/Z)-(1/C) is iterated. In this case, the M-Mix2 formula, with its adjustable starting value of Z, draws the critical plane that the M-Mix4 formulas misses -- not that it makes much difference in the final appearance of the parent fractal. Being colored with the outside=tdis option, today's image is more than lively, it is downright "Frenetic", and that's what I named it. The sharply defined, almost sinister features and almost too-brilliant colors earned the image a rating of an above-average 7. Had it not been for the area immediately surrounding the midget, which seems to have run out of detail, the image might have rated an 8. The <tdis> algorithm often does this when applied to the outside areas of fractals close to high-iteration midgets. There is probably a way to work around it, though I have not yet looked for such a work-around. The render time from the parameter file of 6 minutes on a P200 machine can be cut by over half by downloading the finished GIF image from Paul's site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from Scott's site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The fractal weather Monday here at Fractal Central was cloudy, blustery and chilly, with a temperature of 57F 14C which, combined with the winds, made the porch a bit too cold for the intrepid duo of housecats, who spent the day by the radiator, wishing the heat would come on a bit more often. A treat of mackerel kept them from becoming too testy. As for me, I'm going to spend the rest of the evening dozing in front of the TV, which will be showing a junky old sci-fi or horror thriller, which I will dredge up from my vast collection and which has long since lost its thrill. If I'm lucky I'll doze off fast; if I'm unlucky I'll get to watch the whole thing. Regardless, I'll return in three days with another thrilling chapter of the ongoing FOTD. Until that wondrous time arrives, take care, and ponder the hidden meaning of fractals.
