FOTD -- March 15, 2005 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today is the ides of March. With today's image, we move on to the Rectangular orientation of the Z^2+C Julibrot. The Oblate and Parabolic slices require that the 3-D Julibrot section be oriented in our space with the real(z) axis perpendicular to the Mandelbrot set on the screen. The Rectangular and Elliptic orientations require the imag(z) axis of the Julibrot to be perpendicular to the screen. The Rectangular slices are then the view from left or right; the Elliptic slices are the view from above or below. Today's image is a scene with Rectangular orientation, located in Elephant Valley, which is the prominent valley on the east side of the Mandelbrot set. Elephants are everywhere in this area, and they can be found in nearly every orientation through the Julibrot. By contrast, the Mandelbrot features such as buds and midgets can be found in only a few of the Mandelbrot-orien- ted slices. (This is not strictly true, but we'll ignore the exception for now.) Instead of all facing in the same direction, the elephants in today's image are facing each other, trunk to trunk, and appear to be stomping on a bell. At least, this is what I saw when I was searching for a name for the image. The name "Elephant Bell" reflects what I imagined in the scene. Elephants might be large, but they are not all that unusual in the world of fractals. As a result, I could rate today's image no higher than a perfectly average 5. At nearly 8-1/2 minutes, the render time of the parameter file is within reason, but the download from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> is far more convenient. Monday was sunny but chilly here at Fractal Central. The fractal duo managed nearly a half-hour in the holly thicket, but repeated chilly gusts of wind soon drove them indoors, where they satisfied themselves with an extra treat of tuna. Today is starting the same. I expect pretty much the same reaction from the duo. For me it's more of the usual. The next FOTD will appear in 24 or so hours. Until then, take care, and where is Alice's looking glass? FOTD -- March 14, 2005 (Rating 4) For some reason this fractal would not download for me in Opera or IE. The discussion downloaded, but not the picture. Any ideas anyone, please? John -- John Lewis, jlewis@clara.net on 15/03/2005
