There are several options. Not in any particular order. 1. Run Fractint inside DOSBox or in a virtual machine. I find using DOSBox a bit slow and getting files into and out of a virtual machine has always been problematic for me. For DOSBox see https://www.fractint.net/ftp/current/DOSBox The current patch of Fractint (20.04p17) is here: https://www.fractint.net/ftp/current/dos 2. Run Xfractint on a Linux system. This works fairly well and is fast. Down sides are you need to compile it, the interface is slightly different, and there is no sound. The current source for Xfractint (20.04p16) is here: https://www.fractint.net/ftp/current/linux 3. Run the windows SDL port. This is fast. Sound is not implemented beyond the PC speaker buzz. The fast formula parser optimization doesn't always create the correct image (disable with debug=322 on the <g> screen). Other problems are listed in the New Features section of the Help docs. The current windows SDL port is here: https://www.fractint.net/ftp/experimental/SDL2-fractint-20.05alpha-2022-05-0... It's good to hear from you. Jonathan
hello, jonathan! i've installed the SDL, which seems to work just fine, including some beeps from the speaker... i've yet to find a way to read and/or write PAR/FRM/whatever they are called today to see if my PARs will render, nor have i seen anything that says "here is where you can see a write-to-disk image that has x-y resolution (something not 1024x768)... is there a doc file i missed? much thanks for the options <3 00 caren ParkGallery.org george davis creek, north fork On Tue, Dec 27, 2022 at 5:19 AM Jonathan Osuch <osuchj@mediacombb.net> wrote:

Caren, Yes it has been a while. What a pleasure to hear from you! I can't improve on Jonathan's answer. The only thing he left out is you might actually be able to boot to DOS from a USB stick, but that is probably the hardest option. Hey tTh, did we know you by another name in olden times??? nice to hear from you timothy... i can't say i haven't thought about running a fractal program in the last 30 years, but when i did, it usually butted up against an inability of the hardware to run the software... like xfract recently :) 00 caren ParkGallery.org george davis creek, north fork On Tue, Dec 27, 2022 at 7:43 AM Timothy Wegner <tim@tswegner.net> wrote:

ahh. sorta figured out how to get it to recognise my PARs... having said that, i may have encountered a "few" bugs... after trying one of my earliest (0004), the fractint window changed sizes, the information screen can't be resized (and is difficult to read), and the background colour went to an odd yellow/orange. the colour pallette is not accessible (an angry beep), so i may have to close and reopen the window... ahh, remembering the good ol' days :) 00 caren ParkGallery.org george davis creek, north fork On Wed, Dec 28, 2022 at 6:06 PM ck park <travelgirl.fics@gmail.com> wrote:

ok, i THOUGHT i knew where to find the PAR loader, but it seems i was seeing things... i know that F6 will get me there, but it appears it will do so from one specific point, and well, i haven't found that point again. yet. :) 00 caren ParkGallery.org george davis creek, north fork On Wed, Dec 28, 2022 at 6:26 PM ck park <travelgirl.fics@gmail.com> wrote:

The text screen and the graphics screen are set to the same size, so the text can be hard to read if the window is too small. It should be possible to code the text screen to show up in its own window, I just haven't done it yet. The default locations of maps, pars, formula, etc. are set in sstools.ini. These are initially set to start from the location where the Fractint executable is located. Video sizes are set with the <DEL> key. Default video modes for the <DEL> screen are set in fractint.cfg (but don't use an old one since the format has changed). The docs are found by pressing <F1> twice. If you try to print the documentation, Fractint (SDL) will crash. The resulting document file has most of the docs, but is missing the last couple of pages with historical changes on them. Haven't figured out why. Jonathan

DOSbox is a serious option.

Maybe yes, but is a long time ago. I was in some forums, like POVRAY, PICLAB, FRACTINT... At the time, I have also make some fluffy graphic softwares, like that http://la.buvette.org/vrac/img_kp0.html (~1992)

I posted a few frm and par files back then, was nowhere as involved as the established contributors. Is there a searchable list from then, and beyond . sciwise
