Hello Folks I used to be fairly active as a fractal artist about a decade or so ago! After a long break I want to start creating some more fractals. The first thing I want to do is get all my lost PAR files back together, particularly for the images that I contributed to Fractal Creations Second Edition published by the Waite Group and those posted in the CompuServe Graphics Forum. I have scoured the net and managed to find about 80% of them but the rest are rather elusive. If any of you folks have horded PAR files from this period or know of some sensible person who has an archive (I lost mine in a drive crash) that is on or off the net could you point me in the right direction? Many thanks Peter Moreland
There is an extensive collection of Fractint PAR files in the UltraFractal Library. Don't you have a Fractal Creations 2nd Edition CD? I had posted an ISO image of the disk at fractint.org until recently, but took it down because it was creating a download bandwidth problem for the web host. Looks like the CD has only GIF images, not PAR files, but you could certainly recreate PAR files of your files from the images. Coincidently several fractint contributors from the past have recently reappeared here. Marc Reinig and Peter Moreland are two. Lee Skinner and Caren Park have been lurking all along. Good to hear from the two of you! Hmm Fractint's not TOO old, dates to about 1988 :-) Tim

Standards don't change. Even when they do, they're just extensions, not revamps. I'm sure the author of the formula parser is proud that his wheel is still rolling under this rickety bandwagon and half a dozen imitations that don't support as many types of fractals or as many methods of rendering them. (Parody is high praise, or at least praise from someone who is high.) I think I've seen requests for identifying calculations that hav a constant result throughout the image, but I'm pretty sure that an optimizing parser could identify such. Speaking of optimizations, I've found at least two images that need close inspection for you to notice that they are _not_ in fact symmetric. They show an inverse kind of symmetry. http://ecn.ab.ca/~brewhaha/img/cards/heart.htm http://ecn.ab.ca/~brewhaha/img/cards/diamond.htm (each is over 700k, but they're also 2100 pixels square, which is pretty good for printing). You'll notice that the luminance component (outside=atan, colors=@altern.map) actually has an embossed appearance where the right and left sides are each dark where the other is light and vice-versa. If you are interested in how to combine different views of one fractal in truecolour, then you might find http://ecn.ab.ca/~brewhaha/img/cards/par.gz to be interesting. I'm not as interested in doing that automatically as I was, because I've found that the interface might be complicated. Recently, I composed a fractal that looks like a guitar with the imaginary view of the fractal being the chrominance and the arctangent view being the luminance. In another, I equalized the chrominance view through a mask. So, it's hard to beat FracTint combined with a good pixel editor.

I also have an additional 698 various PAR collections (about 25.9-MB worth) which could have some of yours within them, if they never contained your name in the comments area. The question is, did you always have some identifier in the comments to show it was created by you?? Hello again Gents, I see nothing has changed in the fractal world over the last ten years.. Everyone is as willing to help as ever, now I remember why I enjoyed the collaborations so much! Tim:
Don't you have a Fractal Creations 2nd Edition CD?
Yes I do, but for some reason I cant get some of the images to reproduce, for example 'Meta Cold' doesn't display the correct co-ordinates. rather than a full screen deep zoom I get a tiny sphere at the middle of the image. Ron:
I also have over 300 PAR files, mostly "ancient" stuff, including pete-1.par
Hello Ron. I am sure I remember you from the old days ;-) I have Pete-1.par but would love to see the rest of your par collection if you don't mind sending them to me? Paul:
I have a few of your PAR files.
I reckon I have most of those but I think you may have found one or two for me ;-) I will go through the list and let you know, is that ok? Ron:
There is an extensive collection of Fractint PAR files in the UltraFractal Library. Have your checked there?
Bloody Hell Ron! (forgive the swearing. I am a Brit) Have you been at this for the last ten years with no break?... I am not worthy etc. I found the Ultra Fractal site but not the library; can you give me a URL link for it please? WOW.. I just looked at some of the features for Ultra Fractal (never heard of it before). So what is the story? What are the pros and cons compared to fractint? As I said forgive the ignorance, having been out of the loop for a decade I need you guys to help me catch up! All the best Peter

The main attraction of UltraFractal is its graphic editor abilities, such as the Gradient Editor, layering images like in Adobe's Photoshop, etc. It can handle a good majority of the .FRM formulae from FractInt, but not every fractal type that FractInt can create. UF's ability at using existing .PAR files is fairly good, but is even more limited in correctly producing all of the FractInt .PAR files (such as boundary tracing, etc.).
As I said forgive the ignorance, having been out of the loop for a decade I need you guys to help me catch up!
For an exhaustive list of fractal generators, galleries featuring fractals, and other fractal related information, go to the following: http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/Fractal_Software.html and http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/Fractal_Census.html and http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/Fractal_Links.txt The software link above shows applications in the order of most tried/used by various people. Have you tried toggling floating point math? I believe this PAR requires integer math. Jonathan

Peter, I have the "Fractal Creations 2" .PAR files that came on the 3.5" floppy besides the CD-ROM. Cross-checking showed a few par entries not contained in the files from Jo Weber's site (most entries, however, *do* overlap). If you want, I'll zip them up and send them to you. Regards, Gerald

Yes, of course. I gathered all par-files I could get at that time and I have the permission of most of the artist to make them public. Peter's e-mail adress was lost. You may download the par-files from the sites of the artists and the needed formulas from the fractal downloadsite with George Martin's last version of his formulacollection orgform.
