Hello, I am interested in using fractint (the dos version) but could not get the program to run on my computer. My computer is Windows 2000, with a fairly good processor (3.4 Ghz), lots of space on my hard drive (> 100 GB) and plenty of ram (2 GB). When I ran the dos program I got this error message: run-time error R6009 - not enough space for environment Is this a problem you have encountered before? Thanks, Russell A. Here's Google's cache of a result that sounds like it might help. Sorry for long link. http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:HINWTfaH17oJ:help.lockergnome.com/index.... You may also encounter limitations in modern display adaptors when it comes to running DOS Fractint with them. -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community
Hello David, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I tried a few of the things suggested on the link you gave me, but, similar to the results found by the person who had a similar issue (with Windows XP), they did not fix the problem. It looks like the Win NT based operating systems (Windows 2000 and XP) are not really compatible with DOS. Anyhow, thanks for helping me out and good luck. Sincerely, Russell A. I've never used Fractint with W2K. I understand that W2K doesn't have as much compatibility with DOS apps as XP does. Of course, on hardware I used to have, Fractint and Windows9x didn't get along - the combo would happily freeze the computer completely - while Fractint and IBM's OS/2 operating system got along just fine ... The link about Fractint bugs refers to Fractint 20.0, but perhaps the problem has been fixed in one of the point releases? I think DOS Fractint is up to 20.0.4 or something like that. Another possibility would be to run DOS Fractint under Windows XP using VMWare or some other virtual machine software. You've certainly got the hardware muscle needed to run it that way. I don't know what display resolutions might be available to Fractint when running that way.
Anyhow, thanks for helping me out and good luck.
You're welcome! I've been running XFractint, the Linux version, on my Linux systems. The only piece of DOS Fractint I miss with it is color cycling. -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community

Are you using the mosyt current release, downlable from here: http://www.fractint.org/ftp/current/ Have you run MAKEFCFG.EXE to see about establishing your FRACTINT.CFG file for the correct video adapter/mode settings?? What are the details about your vidoe adapter?? (make, model, type, drivers, etc..) Have you tried right-clicking the FRACTINT.EXE and then tweaking the various settings available?? Compatibility Mode: Windows 98 Conventional Memory -- Total: Auto Initial Environment: Auto (or 4096) etc....
