RE Color maps in the latest FractInt
Thanks Jonathan for responding to my problem with bringing up Fractint's Maps Window with <c> <l>. Preassing <c>, <l> caused the 3 latest versions of Fractint to crash, and then it got worse: I could not even open any of the 3 latest versions (they would immediately crash before completely opening). Well, I just downloaded _SDL2-fractint-20.05alpha-2017-10-15_.zip once again, unzipped it and left the resulting Folder right there in my Downloads Folder. From it I opened Fractint no problem, and I pressed <c>, <l> , brought up the Maps Folder and changed color.maps no problem. So apparently the crashing problems arose because I had MOVED my Fractint Folders (I consolidated all my Fractal stuff residing in Downloads into one Fractals Folder... thus they were moved after I had unzipped them). Note: by 'moved' I mean that I moved the originally-unzipped Folders containing Fractint.exe, SDL2.DLL, etc.; I did not move the .exe or .dll out of their original Folders. So, it looks like I would not have had any crashing problems if I had not moved the _SDL2-fractint-20.05alpha-2017-10-15 Folder_ after unzipping it. At least, my latest re-download tonight is working fine. Thank you Jonathan!

And that has me totally confused. How could simply unzipping files into a folder, then *moving that folder* mess up something in the files themselves so that they now don't work properly? -- David W. Jones gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community http://dancingtreefrog.com
How could simply unzipping files into a folder, then *moving that folder* mess up something in the files themselves...? It doesn't mess up anything in the files. The problem is caused because Windows created a registry key that included where the *original* executable was located -- likely when Jonathan's Fractint SDL was first run in the *original* directory.
Knute ran CCleaner to try and solve this exact problem, and CCleaner found that the key no longer matched the folder that the .EXE was in, and complained, which allowed me to see the key problem. This key mismatch explains why you can move the zip file -- but not the exe -- to another folder, *especially* if you have already run Fractint. - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message----- From: Fractint [mailto:fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of david Sent: Friday, October 20, 2017 2:56 AM To: Fractint and General Fractals Discussion <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: [Fractint] RE Color maps in the latest FractInt On 10/18/2017 10:12 PM, Knute wrote:

Ah, ok, a Windows-only problem. Thanks, Hal. Glad I'm running Linux instead! -- David W. Jones gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community http://dancingtreefrog.com Sent from my Android device with K-9 Mail.

Yes, I've encountered that at my day job, where long pathnames sank access to a number of data files on Windows Server. :( On October 20, 2017 1:13:22 PM HST, Harold Lane <hallane@earthlink.net> wrote:
