FOTD 23-02-03 (Something is Wrong [4])
FOTD -- February 23, 2003 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to water problems here at Fractal Central, which need to be remedied, (leaky roof and flooded basement), today's discussion will once again be short. The fractal is one I found with little effort using the just-renamed MandelbrotMix3a formula. I renamed it because there were two formulas named MandelbrotMix3, and this was causing confusion. The image was rendered with the outside set to the < real > option. In today's image, this option, with often does little, creates an effect rather like a froth of bubbles surrounding the central midget. I named the image "Something is Wrong" because something actually *is* wrong with the image. A careful inspection will reveal subtle inconsistencies in the symmetrical pattern surrounding the midget. I leave it to the viewer to find these inconsistencies. Because of the F.C. water problems, I had so little time to search for today's FOTD that I could rate it no higher than a 4. The 17-minute render time adds nothing at all to the rating. For convenience, the completed image is available on Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and on Scott's site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The weather Saturday was not fit to be called fractal. The 3 inches 8cm of rain that fell during the day melted half of the nearly one meter of snow still on the ground to cause widespread flooding in the F.C. area, including Fractal Central itself. The chilly temperature of 39F 4C merely added to the unpleasant- ness. Conditions were so bad that the dynamic duo seemed to realize that going out was impossible. They didn't even ask, satisfying themselves by sleeping near the heat and enjoying their tuna treats. If I manage to get the mess cleaned up, which will be difficult but will be accomplished, I'll return in 24 hours with the next FOTD. Until then, take care, and keep your powder dry. The FOTD for February 19, 2003 (High-Order Fractal), has been corrected to relect the above modification in the text (the image did not need to be re-generated). I am searching back through past FOTDs to see if others need the same clarification between formulae.
