This is the current beta; beta 4 is no longer available. FractInt for Windows (Beta 5) <http://tinyurl.com/2wqa7r> You can uninstall beta 4 or you can install beta 5 over top of beta 4. If you install over top, beta 4 will be upgraded to beta 5. This fixes all the issues reported earlier with the exception of the history buffer. It appears to reset parameters to their default for the fractal instead of the history buffer parameters, so there is still something going on there... -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

while drawing a fractal pressing F then "any key" crashes the system with a buffer over run Let me say wow I like this program and where it will lead.
Richard, There is still a bug with the rotation of the zoom box. Try zooming-in to circumscribe the black circle just left of the main cardioid of the Mandelbrot set. Then zoom out a little. Then rotate the zoom box with <ctrl-grey|+> until it rotates about 45 degrees. The zoom box is now a rhombus and no longer rectangular in shape. Pressing <Enter> will generate exactly what is in the rhombus, changing that circle into a very noticeable ellipse. Lee

If you set DOS fractint to have the exact same video mode proportions, do you get the same results? I think you will. Fractint is doing something funny with the aspect ratio and I can't find where its doing it. In Windows, all pixels are 1:1 square. But in funny video modes on DOS they may not be square and somewhere fractint is injecting this non-squareness to "fix" something that doesn't need fixing in Windows but would need fixing in DOS. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

No, I'm using standard 3:4 video modes (800x600, 640x480). In DOS, the rotated zoom box maintains its rectangularity. Lee

sorry for my former email. All ok with the new URL.. Cheers, and thanks! Guy
Beta 4 was fine , as far as I'm concerned, but Beta 5 wont work for me. Each time I try to render a fractal, I end up with a message "Disk Video mode".. regardless of the chosen screen resolution. Now what have I done incorrectly? This can happen if you are running a PAR that has a video= parameter in it. The key stroke to video mode translation has been changed. Jonathan
Thanks. This was a special par, and you are probably right. Incidentally, my original message was lost in Cyberspace for several days during which the situation was corrected. You can't select a GDI video mode from <DEL>? -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

I can, but it is annoying to generate an image in a GDI mode, save it then have the default when I restore it be the corresponding disk video mode. Being used to fractint, I'm just used to hitting 'enter' twice after highlighting the file I want to restore without looking and fractint gives me the original video mode. So, it is annoying and would be nice to have fixed, but the images load fast so hitting del and selecting the GDI mode isn't much burden and as annoyances go, it is minor. Which leads me to a very big THANK YOU! to you for your work on getting Fractint into Windows. Mike

OK, but you *know* of course that "restoring an image" from a GIF file and "render a fractal" straight are totally different operations? I see what you're saying now that you mention that you restored the image from a file. Yes, the Disk Video modes are being listed first in that sorted list of video modes when you restore. I'll look into having it put the disk video stuff later in the list.
Which leads me to a very big THANK YOU! to you for your work on getting Fract int into Windows.
I've been mumbling about it since 1999, so its time to get off my ass and make it happen. Currently there doesn't seem to be any new bug reports coming in, except for the spurious buffer overrun error. Beta 6 is likely to be the last beta before a 'final' Windows release. The linux/X11 release will likely have to wait for a while unless someone else works on it because I've got to get back to working on my book before the weather gets too distracting :-). -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

I guess I'll wait until you get the Linux/X11 release done. I'm no person who can work on it. -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community

Did you find the problem withe the color cycling? Thanks again Doug

I haven't investigated it yet, but I will try your repro steps. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>
