Hi all, Just wondering if this mailing list is still alive, I noticed the forums are not active, I hope people still use Fractint. A more practical question: I have v20 of Fractint and just installed v16. I’ve tried to run some of the formulas that come with v20 on v16: the main formulas (FractInt.frm) of v20 run fine on v16 however all the rest of the formulas under /frm do not run (I get error messages) - I thought there was compatibility, am I doing something wrong? Cheers!
Hi Giacomo, the list still works, but I’m not savvy enough to answer your question…all I know that ‘line breaks’ have a lot to do with it. Line breaks need to be separated by a semicolon and some formulas do not follow the rule. Alex Dukay

The list is alive although since Fractint is very old, list traffic is usually very low. Thanks to xmission for donating free mailing lists to fractint all these years! I am puzzled by your question. Why would you go from fractint version 20 to version 16, that must be really very old! Fractint, despite being a very old DOS program, runs very well under DOSBox on many platforms (probably Windows, Mac, and Linux although I haven't tried all of those.). For example, I am running Windows 10 on my main PC, and Fractint 20.04.14 runs like a champ under a version of DOSBox called DOSBox Svn. hey, tim! is there a compiled build of whatever win10x64 is latest for dosbox? i've looked at svn, and what i've seen so far assumes you have an active build environment, something i got rid of when i retired ... don't wanna build no mo... :) thanks, son :) On Sun, May 7, 2023 at 3:48 PM Timothy Wegner <tim@tswegner.net> wrote:

Just run the DOS Fractint executable under DOSBox on Windows or Mac or Linux. No need for a Win64 version of Fractint. I run it under DOSBox under Linux. On May 7, 2023 1:02:38 PM HST, ck park <travelgirl.fics@gmail.com> wrote:

ck, David has it exactly right. On the fractint.net website, there is a file called DOSBoxX_Fractint.zip that contains both a version of DOSBox and the DOS Fractint, but if you look at the executable timetags, the fractint.exe is identical to the executable in the DOS release (8/22/2015). So much time has gone by I had to look at the web site to remember what is going on!! Tim On Sun, May 7, 2023 at 6:42 PM David W. Jones <gnome@hawaii.rr.com> wrote:

Hi Tim and congratulations for the work you have been doing all these years for Fractint! The reason I’m asking about v16 is that I’ve created a setup with the software I had on my first PC and that included Fractint v16. I was able to load the fractint.frm and fractint.par from v20 but I wasn’t able to run any other of the newer formulas and I was just curious as I think that the format of formula files probably remained largely the same. Cheers!

I think I figured it out: in older versions all formula files need to be in the main /fractint directory + some of the formulas are just not compatible with the older version.

Yes, expecting Fractint to be forward-compatible is asking too much. Despite what you surmised, more recent versions of fractint did have changes to the formula parser, and formulas provided with those versions were often chosen to test the changes, so might not work with older versions. Glad you have things working now. Still puzzled at your affection for an even older version of fractint, but there is no accounting for taste! Enjoy! When I became aware of Fractint, decades ago now, it was already quite mature. I was always curious as to how Fractint might be translated into other areas of mathematics, some contributors were knowledgable in mathematics others creative in unexpected ways. Sometimes I wondered, is someone on the list going to code a new physics theory in a few lines of code ? On Tue, May 9, 2023 at 8:19 AM Richard <legalize@xmission.com> wrote:
