. My understanding is that Vista is totally incompatible with fractint. Forget it. Windows XP however, is ok (sometimes). I have 2 WinXP systems, one is a screamer with fractint, the other is a pig. Go figure. I think it is the CPU (athlon better than intel) and graphics card, also the mobo chipset that makes the difference. Win9X is totally ok, you just want a good P2 or P3 system with at least 256K memory and a good graphics card. .

Win9x is "ok" but that depends very much on the display adapter and W9x driver code. When I was still running W9x many years ago, Fractint and the W9x video driver fought over the hardware - producing instant system freeze. No settings changes helped. Jack, would you be willing to detail the specs of that WinXP system that screams with fractint? I haven't been able to run it at all for a very long time and would be tempted to build a dedicated PC. Phil D
