Re: [Fractint] Re: Multiple Boot for FractInt Users
It would appear this didn't get there first time because the address I posted it from wasn't subscribed (I think). ----- Forwarded message from Stephen Stafford <ssta@clothcat.org> ----- Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2004 17:31:20 +0100 From: Stephen Stafford <ssta@clothcat.org> Reply-To: Stephen Stafford <ssta@clothcat.org> Subject: Re: [Fractint] Re: Multiple Boot for FractInt Users To: Fractint and General Fractals Discussion <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Hi, I had a spare half hour, so I threw together a bootable iso image which uses freedos. It's a first approximation/proof of concept only, it's buggy as all hell and the UI isn't exactly great or intuitive. You can find it at: http://www.clothcat.org/scratch/fractint.iso After you boot, you'll want options 1, 1, 2 at the three menus...eventually I want to remove so many menus, that will depend on me having longer than a spare half hour though :) Then "cd FRACTINT" and run "fractint.exe" The FRACTINT directory is just a totally clean unzip of the distribution of 20.0 from spanky, it might be sane to chage that at some point. Some of the available resolutions crash the machine, although most of the testing I've done has been in VMWare, so don't take that as gospel since it does some weird funky stuff with odd resolutions. Cheers, ----- End forwarded message ----- Further to this, all resolutions which I would expect to work appear to work fine if I reboot the machine using the CD rather than trying to run it in vmware, so that seems okay. I hadn't realised before how snappy a bare DOS boot on a 1.5G machine would be. Thank you for making this available. At a size of 57.3-MB, that is a fairly quick and reasonable download for anyone with a high-speed connection. (Those with a dialup modem might wish to abstain.)

This is very good to hear, and what we are hoping to make available to many individuals.

Without the typical bloat-ware running (including OSes), which is prevalent these days, a simple DOS environment running FractInt is very refreshing. ;-} Sincerely, P.N.L. ------------------------------------------------- http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/PNL_Fractals.html http://www.Nahee.com/Fractals/

Looking at it, we really don't need the FreeDOS installer files, or anything in the "EXTRAS" directory. A fair amount of the stuff on the image is surplus to requirements in fact. The isolinux stuff isn't really required if we're not providing multiple boot option. When I get a day spare, I'll have a look and see how minimal it can actually get. Intuitively I'd be stunned if it couldn't be reduced to 10MB or less. This one was just a proof of concept, I didn't bother to pare it down at all. I have no idea how big the Fractal Creations stuff is. I think it would be nice if we could keep the whole project down to a size that would fit on a business card CD. I believe that's 50MB roughly, so whatever goes on there should fit into that ideally. I know that it's the kind of thing I'd like to be able to hand to clients "This is fun, boot it up and have a play". Does anyone know how big the Fractal Creations data is exactly? A nice thing might be to include the pars for every one of Jim Muth's FOTD or similar. Assuming that Jim allows that of course. They are fairly small provided you put several per file. In terms of download size, the image should compress fairly well too.
