State of the Fractint program
Thought I'd clear up a few points. 1. Fractint has always been and will always be open source. This isn't just due to my opinion, it's because everyone who has ever contributed to it has done so with the understanding that it WAS open source. However, as far as my opinion is concerned, I am very happy it is open source, and if I could, I'd change the license over to GPL or a similar license. Easier said than done because we can no longer reach most code contributors. This license change could still happen, but it would be in conjunction with an extensive rewrite. 2. Thanks for all the kind offers of being willing to pay for upgrades. Money is not and never has been an issue. Developers contribute for their own reasons. 3. Right now Jonathan Osuch and occasional other contributers are the only ones maintaining the program. His interest (and my interest) are gravitating to Linux, but we are used to maintaining the Linux version in parallel to the DOS version so we do it. I have never lost interest. It's just that I have a job and a real life and am getting older. I still dream of diving back in. I might, or I might not, we'll see. 4. I don't think the present situation with Fractint is bad or sad. It's the way life is. Software, like people, have a life cycle. I am very pleased that this list is still active and many folks still get pleasure out of Fractint. I suspect Fractint will continue to have a following. It is even possible that it will have a rebirth on other platforms. Whether it fades away or has a rebirth remains to be seen. Either way, I'm happy. Change is the name of the game, especially in technology. Fractint assumed something like it's present form in 1989, which makes it about 13 years old, so in people years that's about a millenium. Not bad!! :-)
Tim: I have a spare machine, a P2/450 which I can eventually upgrade to a P3/800. Which version of Linux runs most optimally with XFractint? How would you rate Redhat Linux 8.0? Tony... I believe all flavours of Linux run XFree86 as the GUI, so from the perspective of getting XFractint to run, they should be all the same. From the perspective of getting a fast, easy install of Linux, RH is a good bet, especially for recognizing and installing your recent peripherals.
From a purist's perspective of being able to manipulate your system to make it do what you want it to do and have it behave as expected, I prefer Slackware.

Tony, As Jerome stated, Xfractint interacts more with XFree86 than it does Linux, since XFree86 is the layer that handles windowing and such. I have ran Xfractint with several different versions of Mandrake Linux (ML), and they all work fine. At one time, ML was based on Redhat Linux, but I don't think it is any more. I have an already-compiled version of Xfractint available on my Website, along with instructiions and hints-n-tips. Quite a few people have written to me saying that my Web page was very helpful. They've also reported that Xfractint works on several different flavors of Linux. (I need to get that page updated some day...) It's at: http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/xfractint/xfractint.html Scott On Saturday 26 October 2002 00:20, Tony Parker wrote:

Hi Gang: Ok! Here I am navigating DOS using Fractint. I don't want to be swithing in and out of Win98 just to edit and handle my files. Is there a good Dosshell type program like Xtree that has dos file mangement features, text editing, as well as *.GIF file viewing capability? Anyone remember Norton Commander? Does anyone remembr if it had *.GIF image file viewing capability Xtree has *.bmp image viewing but doesn't support *.gif viewing. Any suggestions? All the Best Tony
Yes. There are GWS (Graphic Workshop System), GDS (Graphic Display System), QUIKVIEW, and some others, all supporting GIF and even (QUIKVIEW) animated GIF. I did not use much these, however. But please tell me something, Tony: why do you want another GIF viewer having Fractint? You know, to see other types of GIF I mainly used Fractint in the past. It has some drawbacks, but I coped with them. XTREE is exactly what I want! My sole surviving copy of Xtree Gold 3.0 for DOS, has survived over 12-13- years of crashes, virusses, different generations of DOS and Windoze upgrades, and is still limping along in the back of my Windoze... Unfortunately, I can't seem to get XTREE to read any of the GIF filez that I ask it to view. I don't know whether or not it's broke, or just needs to be tweaked, configured, and coaxed along a little.... Do you know where I can get a nice clean "virgin" copy? I'm (still) using the old NC version 5.5.. it works fine, even in a Win-XP Dos-Box. I do not use the incorporated gif-viewer but a little prg called 'display.exe' and/or 'gifdesk.exe' (ver. 4.6) for the *.gif files..
Anyone remember Norton Commander? Does anyone remembr if it had *.GIF image file viewing capability
in the NC, you can e.g. view¨*.gif files with the display.exe or the gifdesk.exe with the following lines (in a file called nc.ext): gif: c:\your_path\display.exe !.! gif: c:\your_path\gifdesk.exe *.gif !.! par: c:\your_path\fractint video=sf7 parmfiles=!.! par: c:\your_path\partobat !.! frm: c:\your_path\fractint video=sf7 type=formula formulafile=!.! and so on..
Xtree has *.bmp image viewing but doesn't support *.gif viewing. Any suggestions?
