Re: Fractint Digest, Vol 41, Issue 16
C:\DOS C:\DOS\RUN RUN\DOS\RUN ! Sheesh! Why don't people (if you're serious about using Fractint) just get a second hand computer and install real DOS or Win9X ? All this about virtual PC and video card problems is getting old already. A little time and $100 can get you running fractint just like the good old days! Whatever.

I happen to agree. I have a small gathering of old motherboards here, with processors ranging from 400MHz P2 to 900MHz P3, SIMMs of various sizes and speeds, a couple of 6GB hard drives, and an assortment of video cards that worked with Fractint in the past. I was going to recycle them, but the only way to recycle them in Hawaii anymore is to PAY $0.20-$0.80/pound to the one company in Hawaii that takes them. (Thanks to one of Hawaii's new environmental laws, computers are now classified as hazardous waste and cannot be legally disposed of in landfills. If you can't afford to pay someone to recycle them, guess where they're going to go, Hawaii? ILLEGALLY dumped into dumpsters where they end up in landfills ... sigh.) Add something like FreeDOS and you have a good standalone Fractint machine. Add Linux and QEMU, or W9x, and you have a networkable Fractint machine. I've moved my own (limited by time) Fractint work to XFractint, which works quite nicely on my two Linux boxes. -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community
But who wants to do it the easy way? ----- Original Message ----- From: jackoftradez@comcast.net To: fractint@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Saturday, July 29, 2006 9:17 PM Subject: [Fractint] Re: Fractint Digest, Vol 41, Issue 16 C:\DOS C:\DOS\RUN RUN\DOS\RUN !
