I seem to have finally fixed my problem, and in a hideously simple manner. ......... I then noticed that the "read only" bit was set on the installed file. ..... So I turned it off, and, to be safe, restarted. ........ My guess is that the install process set the bit to protect it during the upgrade, and failed to remove it.
Glad to hear you are now functioning again, logging on to sites, downloading upgrades and installs, etc... You may notice that this "Read Only" switch is not set for many files on your system.
