I had the same machine Dell 8400 with the same problem, it was a capacitor on the motherboard. I don't think capacitors would respond to Jim Muth's computer being off. Since tunring it off for a few hours will make it work again, it is a dust problem, or a fan problem. Jim Muth's computer is overheating.
