Tim, Thanks for reporting where to get a copy of Johnathan's current alpha SDL version of Fractint. My comments here are mostly not about his version of Fractint (I call it FractSDL -- for an 8-character name), but rather about what hurdles I overcame to get it running on my Win 10 machine. - My Anti-virus program, Avast, would not let it run until I configured its: Settings > General > Enable CyberCapture to: "allow me to decide" - My Firewall, Comodo, would not let it run until I configured its ("Advanced View"): "BLOCKED APPLICATIONS" > Right click on Fractint.exe > UnBlock I may possibly have done some other configurations that I don't recall, but I think these items are what let Fractint.exe successfully run and create the default Mandelbrot set. - <PgUp> and the arrow keys do what I expected. - On the "X" page, it was disconcerting to not see a cursor at "the text cursor position", altho I was able to change the 150 iterations to 1500... - "E" allows loading a different color map, instead of bringing up the outline of the enhanced / Extended(?) Color Editor. Do you know whether Johnathan is soliciting/desires to get "bug reports" yet, and if so, where and how? (As you said, it may be too early for these.) - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message----- From: Fractint [mailto:fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Timothy Wegner Sent: Monday, August 7, 2017 12:30 PM To: Fractint and General Fractals Discussion <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: [Fractint] Windows SDL Port First a huge disclaimer - Jonathan Osuch has a very demanding job and can only work on fractint a few hours a week, if that. So he can't respond to feedback in a timely way. This is not to say he doesn't want feedback. That said, Jonathan has been working on an SDL (https://www.libsdl.org/) port of fractint that runs natively on Windows, including Windows 10. This effort is hiding in plain site on the website here: http://fractint.net/ftp/experimental/ Just download the SDL*.zip file, dump the contents somewhere, navigate to the fractint.exe file, and run it. The SDL port can potentially be compiled on other platforms, e.g. Ubuntu Linux, but Jonathan doesn't have that working yet. A couple of points. This is a literal port of the classical DOS fractint, not a normal windows application. So the interface looks a lot like the DOS fractint, and is probably hard to use if you are not familiar with the classic version. This is not even a winfract port, which has some windows interface features. This is alpha quality. An amazing amount works but some things (probably a lot of things) don't. It would be interesting for some of you DOS fractint experts to give this a try. If it seems promising, you might consider some systematic testing (might be premature). Since the list is quiet these days, I see no harm in discussing the results here. Probably you folks can help each other out, since Jonathan will only occasionally be able to chime in.
