I'd be curious to know what systems folks use to run fractint.
My quick survey, with the caveat that I have not run Fractint much in the last 10 years, so some of you are MUCH more expert ...
1. I can run fractint pretty well in DOSBOX under Windows 7 64 bit. In fact in runs really well, I just noticed that the emulated CPU can be sped up. Mouse works.
Never tried that.
2. Runs (barely) in a Win98 VirtualBox virtual machine under Windows 7 64bit. Need to experiment more.
On an old machine (no longer around), it would hang the machine. Fighting with W98 over the display hardware the machine had.
3. Runs really well under Windows 98 on an old machine.
Ran perfectly well on the same hardware under OS/2 Warp. Could even run in the background while I used the system for other things. Never got that to work under W95 (which didn't have the display hardware conflict that W98 had) but W95 wasn't any good at multitasking.Runs fine under Windows XP running under Oracle VirtualBox running under 32-bit Linux. Didn't have to use F3 mode, just started up the XP VM, opened a CMD window, and ran fractint. Rendered an image at 800x600, didn't try anything higher.
4. Runs in F3 mode under Windows XP, better in DOSBOX.
Of course, the Linux native XFractint runs fine, too. I primarily use XFractint.
