It has to do with your machine's video card and what it supports.
If you wish to run FractInt on that environment, you have at least two options: • Use a video card that will handle VESA modes under Win-XP. • Run the DOS-Box emulator (or something equivalent).
I keep an old Win-98 machine around such things. Though I have used DOS-Box under Vista and Win-7, just to test the ability of FractInt.
