FOTD -- April 12, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is another of my evaporated fractal scenes. When I raised the escape radius of the original image to one-googol, the outside material evaporated, leaving only trapped 'inside' points on the screen. But those trapped points wander far afield in their confinement, doing interesting things that the < bof61 > inside fill has revealed. The parent fractal was created by combining negative portions of Z^(-1.8) and Z^(-8), and adding 1/C instead of C. Using 1/C in an iteration generally turns the fractal inside-out, but since fractals with negative exponents of Z are already inside-out, the 1/C merely reverses the natural inside-out and turns the image rightside-out. I named today's image "Merry Chaos". It's kind of a jolly- sounding name, and with its wealth of detail, the image is rather jolly looking. I rated the image at a 6, which is slightly above normal. A residual muddiness prevents me from rating it higher. With a render time of 9 minutes, the parameter file is a bit on the slow side. The better (and faster) way of viewing the scene is to download the completed GIF image from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The FOTD-CD is progressing slowly. It is rapidly becoming apparent that I will never bring it to a satisfactory state of absolute perfection, and will have to release it with flaws still remaining. The difficulty is that my artistic nature has kicked in, and for everything I fix, I find something else that needs fixing. And with over 2000 images and discussions, even the slightest change means days or weeks of work. I wasted nearly a week trying to reformat every discussion to the same format before convincing myself that it makes no difference. The only thing I really want to do is rename the GIF images from their present cryptic names to the dates on which they appeared. When this is done, which is no small task, I will declare the job finished and ready for distribution. Thomas and Tippy, the fractal-cat duo, are not concerned with compact disks. They are concerned that we have just ended a solid week of rain, and they have not been outdoors in 4 or 5 days. But this morning the clouds are thinning, and I would not be surprised to see the sun appear in an hour or two. If this happens, the fractal cats will be overjoyed. For myself, it will mean a day of lawn trimming. That's it for this week. The daily FOTD will reappear on May 1. Until next Saturday, take care, and never abandon the search for fractal reality, whatever that is.
