I have some totally kludgey suggestions at the end of my message which I can't guarantee, but try it out, who knows it might actually work! I have Win2000 but I am using FAT32 file system partitions on my hard drive because of all my legacy DOS software. I don't know if fractint.exe and makfcfg.exe can "see" other files, drives, and directories if they are running in a NTFS file system partition. Many of the older DOS type programs will not run even in a DOS box on WinXp, Even if they do load & sort of run they might not be able to "see" other files, drives, and directories. You are just going toi have to experiment. I do know that a DOS 7.0 boot floppy will only "see" FAT16 and FAT32 files system partitions. A DOS 7.0 will not see a NTFS file system partition. On the other hand, if you have some extra free space on your hard drive, you can creat a separate FAT16 or FAT32 file system partition with one of the WinNT/2000/XP setup and partition utilities. Partition Magic is a great 3rd party partion utitlity that allows you to create all kinds (FAT16, FAT32, OS2, NTFS, Unix, Linux, etc.) of different file system partitions and conversions. Here's a totally kludgey idea! Put makefcfg on your DOS 7 boot floppy. Boot your system with the DOS 7 Boot Floppy. Run makefcfg.exe. Hopefully it might actually "see" your video card's vesa registers and write a fractint.cfg file on your boot floppy. Reboot your PC in WinXp. WinXp should be able to "see" and read files on a DOS7 FAT16 or FAT32 Floppy disk. Rename the fractint.cfg file in your Fractint directory to "fractintcfg.old". Then copy the fractint.cfg file on your floppy to the Fractint directory. Create and configure a "DOS box" & icon for fractint.exe. Double click the fractint icon to run fractint.exe. Who knows? It even might work. Hope this helps, TG ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doug Stewart" <dastew@sympatico.ca> To: <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, October 17, 2002 10:16 PM Subject: Re: [Fractint] Re: Fractint on XP

This assumes that you have fractint.exe and makefcg.exe located in a directory on a FAT (16) or FAT32 file system partition that is readable

DOS 7.
And if I only have NTFS, then ????
If I booted to dos from a floppy and ran makefcg.exe from the floppy, would it get the settings that I need? Doug Stewart
