My computer says "Designed for Windows NT and 98" and I don't even believe that. (If I did, then I wouldn't hav tried Linux). As far as I'm concerned it was designed for DOS and Win3.1, which would be a bit nicer if MicroSoft's Win32s would install again (because I can quit from it without rebooting the machine).
God, I long for the days of Win 3.1. I had to upgrade from my old flintlock 486/80 to a Win 98 PII so I could run Java and burn CDs. I hoped I would adjust to the '95 and subsequent limitations and quirks, but still: - I'm G**-damned sick and tired of not being able to do block file renames. I archive a LOT of data from my Web surfing, and I despise having to manually rename every file without an extension to .TXT or whatever so I don't have to tell Windoze what app to use to open it. - I'm also tired of Win 98 (which is the latest Win OS I can run without employing fancy workarounds to support pure DOS mode) trying to second-guess me when I am dragging files between folders and questioning my every decision to change a file extension. - I'm REALLY tired of Microsnot referring to reduced capability, bugs, quirks, and other defects as "features". I know I should move to some Linux-based solution, but am afeared of compatability issues with old DOS and Windoze apps...
Actually, this contraption has two warning labels. The other is "Intel Inside", but at least Linux wil tel you if you hav one of their buggy chips.
I hear you. The old 486 box had an AMD chipset and was considerably more stable than the Intel/PII/Win98 system. Of course maybe it's the OS... ========== In Fractint tradition, I offer a PAR in penance, a glimpse into the enticing universe of Sylvie Gallet's gravijul-v3: gjv3-ai { ; * cotan/asin /exp z/o ah decomp sg6 (c) Bud 2002 20 Dec reset=2002 type=formula formulafile=gravjulz.frm formulaname=gravijul-v3 function=cotan/asin/exp passes=1 center-mag=-0.41318/0.502105/3.846154/1.3333/-90/3.88578058618804789e-01\ 6 params=-1.003/-0.289156/-0.003/0.002/4/0 float=y maxiter=256 inside=255 outside=imag decomp=256 periodicity=0 viewwindows=2/1/yes/0/0 cyclerange=0/255 sound=beep/fm colors=000G00J00L00<12>a00b00c00<3>i00k00m00o00q00<3>x00z00y00<24>T88R88\ Q88<2>M99KAALBB<24>ljjmkknmm<2>qqqsssrrr<24>JMOIKNGJL<2>CFIADGAEH<24>2dq\ 2er2ft<2>1ix0kz0jy<24>DMPDLOEKM<2>FHIGGGHHG<24>qkTrlUtnU<2>xqWzsXyrW<30>\ GG0 } frm:gravijul-v3 { ; Variation on Mark Christenson's gravijul by Sylvie Gallet z = pixel: w = fn1(z) z = fn3(fn2(w*w)^p1) + p2 |z| < p3 } Aloha, Bud <lurk>
