Paul,
Apparently
Damien Jones' server is not functioning
Correct, due to a hard drive that was becoming more and more damaged
and that, due to more pressing matters, I did not have time to deal
with. There are actually some things more important than fractals and
web sites.
or
he has forgot to pay his Internet connection fee.
Come now Paul, that's just speculation on your part. And wrong too,
since the bill is paid automatically and I personally know the host; he
would call me if there was a problem with the billing before shutting
me off. But it was a hardware failure in any case.
Because,
all of the email discussion lists, all of the Domain Names hosted, and
anything else run from there stopped working around midnight (CST) of
April 28th.
That's true. Email service has been restored, and access to web sites
is partially restored, at least for now, but the underlying faulty
hardware has not yet been replaced.
What
is rather interesting is the fact that Frederik moved the UF domain
away from Damien's server to his own location just a matter of days
before. Did he have "insider knowledge" of what was going to happen??
Traffic for Frederik's site has been growing steadily and for some time
he's been contemplating moving his site to a different host. At the
same time, I've become increasingly busy professionally and have not
had the same amount of time to attend to hosting needs. Since neither
of these trends seems likely to change, we both recognized a couple of
weeks ago that it was time for ultrafractal.com to new hosting. So yes,
in a sense, he had inside knowledge, because I hosted him for ten years
and I do actually tell him what's going on. You, on the other hand, do
not have inside knowledge.
I've been pleased to be able to provide hosting to many fractal-related
projects over the years; I started doing it when decent hosting was
difficult to come by and/or expensive. Hosting is now very easy to come
by, and I no longer have the time to do what I used to do. I'm content
with my role changing because I know nothing lasts forever.
