If you want to get the same layering effect and exactly choose what areas to overlap, don't bother with hypercomplex. Instead, just write code that will simultaneously iterate two points for every pixel and bail out if *either* of them escapes, to decide the iteration count, where the two points are determined by separate zoom-mapping.
