I know that there is malware that checks your email account
and infiltrates every address found.

If itīs harmless as it was in your case, yes.
If not, maybe of the type NSA uses, you need
an earlier image of your OS to get rid of it.
After the last attack on my XP computer
this apparently was the case - it was very
slow afterwards.
