FOTD -- September 22, 2008 (Rating ?.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the pseudo-East Valley of the parent fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.9)+C is iterated 66 levels up the logarithmic ladder with no function applied. (I'm not sure how the various functions make the mathematics any more accurate, but they sure do add to the variety of fractals.) I could not decide on a rating for today's image, so I finally let it go with a question mark plus 1/2 point for the effort I put into smoothing the palette of only 256 colors. Sometimes I look at the FOTD fractals I create and feel like I'm living in the past. I'm still enthusiastic about the type of fractals that were being created in the late 1980's. Then I feel like a total anachronism, a lone scientist in a makeshift laboratory, with wires clumsily hooked up to batteries, search- ing for the most efficient filament to put in an incandescent light bulb, while the rest of the world has moved on to far more efficient light-emitting-diodes. But what the heck -- finding fractals uses so little energy that it may actually help us out of the latest what's-up crisis. I named today's image "Almost an Elephant" because it is located in the trunk of an East-Valley elephant that is only 90-percent there. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is brief by any standard. And the trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> to view the completed image is ultimate convenience. Sunday here at Fractal Central began with fog, but with a strong sun, the fog cleared off by 10:00am, leading to a most pleasant day, with tons of sun and a perfect temperature of 77F 25C. The fractal cats were distracted for a few minutes by the crows that gathered in the yard to finish off a bag of cheesy corn curls, then the duo settled for a nap on their shelf in the sun. My day was average, which is all that need be said. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and be fractally frugal with our limited resources.
