The color map is from the image "Leather Gem" by Damascena Korwen, an entry in the Fractal-Art 1998 Contest: http://www.fractalus.com/contest98/entries/09-013.htm When I rotated the color map approximately 96 steps at a time I could watch the 'medallions' ('eyes' with spirals in them) be highlighted in the ring of 16 'eyes', then 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and then 1024 'eyes' in a 1024 x 768 version of the image. I like to trace this 'period doubling' of features as they approach the Mandelbrot set.
