Can you not install a program that lets you use multiple operating systems chosen at startup? Then use either Win98 or DOS. I've never used xfractint, but maybe someone here who does could give you some tips if they have overcome these problems.
I had a dual boot system when I first switched from DOS6.22/Win310 to Linux. Problem then was that DOS was either too old for the hardware or the hardware was too new for DOS. I've never used Win98. I'll just wait for the next version of xfractint. In the meantime I use some other fractal generators for Linux, they all have nice features, but I still miss the features of fractint.
