Bill:
We know that Fractint definitely does work on WinNt
and Win2000, and that Fractint also runs on some of the other WinXp systems
that belong to members of this mail list.
We know that Fractint works on your system when it
is booted from DOS. that eliminates the possibility of hardware
problems between your PC and your video card and Fractint.
I think that you have eliminated almost all
possible causes of your software and OS problems. I suspect that your
problem is determining the proper configuration WinXp and your Dos box.
If I were you, I'd start looking up the MS WinXp
"trouble-shooting knowledgebase" Database, for running Dos programs on
WinXp.
If all else fails, you can use the "multiboot"
idea, which I have used in the past with Win2000. There used to be a multiboot menu feature in WinNt and Win2000 that
would allow you the choice to boot to either a FAT16 DOS partition, and run DOS,
or to boot to an NTFS partition and run WinNt and/or Win2000. I don't know if
that feature still exists in WinXp
Norton also had a multiboot utility that used to be
called Norton Commander (not to be confused with the really really ancient DOS
file management utility by the same name.) which is probably still
available from somebody.
All the best,
Tony

What are your default desktop video settings when in Windows XP?
You can determine that by right-clicking your mouse on a blank part of your
standard desktop and then clicking your "settings" tab. Is there a
possibility in XP that you can't exceed the default video settings of your
desktop? i.e. if your default video settings are at 640x480 you can't access
800x600, also check the settings of your Fractint.exe "Dos
box".
My screen resolution in XP is set at 800 x 600 so
that can't be it. I looked at the settings of the DOS box. The
only setting I can see that directly addresses resolution is on the
Compatability tab. There is a box to check off that says "Run in 640 x 480
screen resolution." I have it unchecked. (I've tried it both ways
and it doesn't change anything.)
The memory settings of the DOS box are
set at the defaults. Per Steven Hessler's info posted here last week,
these shouldn't matter.
