Thanks Jonathan for responding to my problem with bringing up Fractint's Maps Window with <c> <l>. Preassing <c>, <l> caused the 3 latest versions of Fractint to crash, and then it got worse: I could not even open any of the 3 latest versions (they would immediately crash before completely opening).
Well, I just downloaded _SDL2-fractint-20.05alpha-2017-10-15_.zip once again, unzipped it and left the resulting Folder right there in my Downloads Folder. From it I opened Fractint no problem, and I pressed <c>, <l> , brought up the Maps Folder and changed color.maps no problem.
So apparently the crashing problems arose because I had MOVED my Fractint Folders (I consolidated all my Fractal stuff residing in Downloads into one Fractals Folder... thus they were moved after I had unzipped them). Note: by 'moved' I mean that I moved the originally-unzipped Folders containing Fractint.exe, SDL2.DLL, etc.; I did not move the .exe or .dll out of their original Folders.
So, it looks like I would not have had any crashing problems if I had not moved the _SDL2-fractint-20.05alpha-2017-10-15 Folder_ after unzipping it. At least, my latest re-download tonight is working fine. Thank you Jonathan!
And that has me totally confused. How could simply unzipping files into a folder, then *moving that folder* mess up something in the files themselves so that they now don't work properly? -- David W. Jones gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community http://dancingtreefrog.com
