Paul... Yes, I had run MAKEFCFG.EXE, and below is the file produced.
Thank you for this part of it, but was wondering if you could re-run it using these options: makefcfg.exe 16 true overwrite and then send me the resulting file as an attachment, along with the complete video card name, manufacturer, model number, driver version, OS version, modes that work with what was created, etc.... I am trying to compile a list of various environments to make available online for current and future Users of FractInt. And if anybody else would care to take the time to do this, it would be much appreciated. Just send the data privately instead of to the List.
On checking through the archives I see that this discussion is by no means new.
Yes, it has been discussed on and off for about six years now, ever since Win-2K came out (and to some extent, ever since Win-9x was released).
I just haven't been around for the earlier messages.
Yes, my fairly recent replies on this topic have been in the latter half of June of this year up until now. Jim's posted message (where he talked about thinking it had to do with Win-XP Pro) was posted on Monday, June 12, 2006 at 11:47:29 -0400. That was when I replied later in the night with more specific details on the differences with Pro versus Home editions of Win-XP.
I'm puzzled, still, about this seeming dependance of Fractint upon the flavor of the XP installed.
There is no dependence on the edition of Win-XP, or it's release or version. I currently own twelve different machines, all running different Windows OS versions. Three of them are using the Home edition, each with different video cards. And they are all capable of running FractInt and producing images and various display modes.
Maybe it's coincidence that the later shop-bought machines come with video adapters that are useable?
Every different video card available, along with all the different version levels of drivers that can go with any single card, make up so many variations in the environment with which something can run, that it is just happens to be exactly that in your situation: a coincidence.
What I was unable to do on my old computer, (XP Home), was to run more than a couple of DOS commands. On the new one I can enter DOS from Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt. There I can perform a "MEM/C|MORE" whereupon I can see DOS loaded into upper memory, just like the "good old days". Surely this is a factor in the running of Fractint? No?
I can do DOS commands, from the Command Prompt, on all of the Home editions of Win-XP running on my machines. Have been doing so for several years now. Not having access to your old machine, I can not say exactly what problems you were having, nor how they could have been resolved.
