Hi I recently had some work done on my computer and am unable to run Fractint now- I have a very knowledgeable computer consultant but he is not particulary familiar with Fractint so I was wondering if i can get some input from the list. here are the details- Since about 1999 I have had a Pentium 500 running Windows '98 which was put together by the consultant. It has a Matrox something or other card that was chosen for Fractint and I have been very happy with this system. I use Netscape rather than Microsoft Explorer and it was version 4 something, have recently been unable to access some web sites because of the old version of Netscape. I use a modem. This did not bother me much because we have a fast connection at work and if I needed to find something I could do it at work. I did want to be able to listen to streaming audio and download MP3's which I was not able to do but other than that was happy. I would not have changed anything except there started to be a smell and I thought the fan had broken- it was intermittent, turned out to be the power cord burning and it was replaced. Meanwhile, they upgraded Netscape and installed some virus software and other stuff and now I cannot run Fractint. I had version 18.6 in a file with about 2000 formulas, gifs, unrelated stuff. It would draw the default mandelbrot and then the computer would freeze, Ctrl-alt- delete would not work and it needed to be unplugged. I downloaded the newest version of Fractint into a separate file and it worked once but could not access the other files. I backed up those files onto a CD (and as i came back into the room where the computer was not in its usual place, tripped over the open CD drawer and broke it.) Then I decided to download the new Fractint into the old file, thinking the program was corrupted in some way. It did not work and froze the computer. Then I tried the other version in the new file and it also does not work reliably but sometimes works- it seems to depend somewhat on what video mode I choose but mostly freezes the computer. I suspect something in the new software is interfering- is this likely?- I'll list the new software below. While the computer was being fixed I had decided to get a new laptop to take to work and to connect to the T1 line and to do new stuff on, and to keep this computer to run Fractint and some older DOS programs etc., so I would be happy to go back to the old situation if I knew what the problem was. (BTW I selected a beautiful light IBM think pad, their customer service and technical support has been superb, they answer the phone in 90 sec and know who you are, unfortunately the laptop died midway through set-up and they are replacing it no questions asked, so you can imagine I'm a little frustrated.) Here's a list of the new software: Netscape 7.1 real Player latest free version WinAmp Ad-aware6.0 Norton antivirus 2003 Live!ware new Windows Media Player Anyone have any ideas??? Thanks so much- Kathy Roth
