Hmm, my not-so-modern Duron box, where Fractint runs very happily under OS/2, never uses the disk in that situation. OS/2 tells the DOS session that it has a huge pile of extended or expanded or DPMI memory, and Fractint says "Weeeee!"
Heck, even the oldest computer in the house (350MHz AMD K6-2) has 384MB of RAM, although Fractint and Windows never got along on it ...
