FOTD -- October 27, 2011 (Rating 9.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The minibrot in today's image does not really exist. Yes, I know it can be seen in the image, hovering mystically above an alien horizon, but is it really there? I think not. Since the minibrot consists totally of 'inside' stuff, it is a virtual- virtual thing in the virtual world of fractals. Anyone who doubts this can change the 'inside' setting from the 'bof61' of the image to 'numb' and observe the incredible vanishing minibrot. The parent fractal came about when I subtracted a very unlikely portion of Z^(0.45) from an equally unlikely portion of Z^(0.76), then added C on each iteration. When rendered in the usual manner, this parent fractal is certainly the least promising fractal in FOTD history -- an egg-shaped oval with a pinched-off west edge, straight edges devoid of any detail, and a blank inside. But in fractal land things are not always as they seem, and the apparently blank inside of this parent holds a surprise. The surprise lies at the point where the X-axis crosses the eastern edge of the parent fractal, where a tiny minibrot lies hidden, an etheric thing that barely exists in the empty inside of the parent. This minibrot is revealed by the active inside fills, especially the 'bof61' of today's image. The 'fmod' inside option also creates an interesting image, and this image may be adjusted by changing the proximity factor. The rating of a whopping 9.5 reflects the surprise I felt when I found the hidden minibrot. It also includes the standard half-point for the coloring. It might have rated a perfect 10 if I had not posted a different version many years ago. The name "The Mystic Minibrot" was inspired by the overall feeling of the image -- that of a strange alien landscape with mystic forces invisibly at work in the infinite blue depths of the sky. The image is a very fast one, finishing in 42 seconds on the 200mhz machine and an estimated 12 seconds on the 2000mhz unit, which is currently out of action, and will remain out of action until I get a chance to try some of the suggestions I recently received from the list. . All of you have given helpful and potentially useful recommendations, but noone has yet mentioned the most likely cause: Posession by evil spirits! That's right! These chips are now so complex and intelligent they can indeed be posessed by evil demons. This is the only conclusion I can come to after all the years I have dealt with intractable computer issues. The only solution is digital excorscism or execution, followed by rebirth and resurrection. (ie., trash it and get a new machine) Hope this helps. .

Fractal parsed in 2009 after a long time under a forested cover. I used my self random number generator to find the random # i used in the formulae. I do remember lot's of strange activity in the nature around me, animal get strange sometime and show a lot. A rat show up once will i was parsing and put is legs on my mouse pad watching with me the developping screen. Later a bat jam in my hair, and lot's of bird where comming really close during the day, leaving themself just once step before the toutch. Altought it was hunting time. Interesting experiment i done with nature and computer. Leaving the screen light on alone outside during the night to attract wild life with. Working with bat and rat... Machine probleme.

Machine probleme. I was form has a technician before 1994, and so since i do fractal i encounter 2 machine probleme, they seem to be generated about every 4 years, my systeme is not log on internet, i use the library for communication. so, usually when my machine get unstable, i simply ruffly format the c:base with a dos disquette, usually i also have ms-dos has second operating system, and re-install windows. I'v been thru two machine since 1998, one crash disk and the last one end-up over heating with a working fan?!. Belived me or not since physic law accept, that code alone cannot harm the machine, me i observe different thing, doing fractal art seem to affect the inner core or the processor, he seem to grow with the use and also get tired overtime, seasonal reaction also had been observe. Another strange fact, my self owned windows xp, was jamming when i was trying to re-install it on a new hard drive on my first accident(crash disk) ? Mother board and processor are cheap now day, and for me it's was the only way to keep fracting up First day of spring 2011, the exact moment when the pollen go free on the air for the first time, i use the parameter set on by Jim muth, and the reaction was slightly different this time. FOTD -- October 26, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Even though the desigated fractal computer is still out of action, the amount of time I spent finding and creating today's image must be near a record minimum. The parent fractal came about when I combined Z^(100) with 40 parts of Z^(0.1) before adding straight C on every iteration. This parent resembles nothing as much as the little 'pac-man' game figure that was so popular back in the days when computer games were still fun. (Maybe they still are and I'm simply too old-fashioned to realize it.) A tiny Mandelbrot set lies where pac-man's mouth would be located; today's image lies is a field of swirling debris on the northern side of this tiny M-set. The image is unusual because of the unusual curvilinear elements surrounding the central minibrot. Most of the coloring effect was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'summ' and color register 001 set to 000. The name "A Spirit of Adventure" could apply to Stanley's explorations in Africa in the 19th century. Today however, it refers to the virtual adventures in the not-quite-as-real world of fractals. When all things were considered, I rated the image at a 7. After all, I have been to this area previously in FOTD history. The image is a quick one, taking only 27 seconds on the slow machine and an estimated 7 seconds on the fast one, which is still out of action. This brief time will bring no frustration to those who decide that running the parameter file was a waste of time. FOTD -- October 25, 2011 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's rather harmless image is named "Empire of Numbers". The name refers to the entire world of fractals, whose building blocks are the abstractions we call numbers. And for all I know, the name might refer to the 'real' world as well. The building blocks of the 'real' world are atomic 'particles', and any serious book on quantum theory soon leaves the impression that these 'particles' resemble numbers rather than the tiny electrically-charged billiard balls that usually come to mind. Unfortunately, the 6.5 quality of the image fails to live up to the magnificence of the idea that the universe is made of numbers. The image lies in the Z^(2.02)+C Mandeloid as it appears one level down the complex logarithmic hyperladder (hyperspiral) with the 'recip' function applied. This parent fractal is a fairly normal Mandelbrot set rotated about 30 degrees CCW so that the main spike shoots out toward the WSW. Today's image lies in a clump of debris piled along the negative X-axis, just north of the large period-2 bud of the rotated parent. The rating of a 6.5 is all I could manage for the image. There is nothing really wrong with it, but neither is there anything outstanding. Additional color work might have raised the rating to a 7; I failed to see enough potential to try however. Curiously, in keeping with the season, the parameter file coding for color registers 1, 2 and 3 is BOO. The calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes is an estimate. The image actually took 8-1/2 minutes to finish on the 200mhz machine. The machine has so many problems that it would likely be a losing battle. Until we purchase the next business machine, I'll probably use the old warhorse 200mhz machine (It's slow but it runs perfectly.) Then I'll convert the outdated unit to fractal duty. FOTD -- October 02, 2011 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The math expression that was iterated to create today's image is Z^2+C, the same expression that gives us the well-known classic Mandelbrot set with all its perturbed sets, as well as all the Julia sets. Yet the image is clearly nothing at all like a Mandelbrot set, pure or perturbed, nor does it resemble any Julia set. This is because it is a slice through the Z^2+C Julibrot in what I call the Rectangular direction, which is defined by imag-C,imag-Z. The rectangular shape of the slice shows why I call this particular orientation the Rectangular direction, and also explains the name I gave to the image -- "Rectangular Reason". The large open area that fills a good part of the frame is a different view of the main bay of the M-set. The narrow bluish stripes running horizontally at the top and bottom of the open area are what I call 'bridges'. In this case they are sideways views of the west branches of the valleys leading to the large north and south period-3 buds of the M-set. The horizontal open areas above and below these 'bridges' are sideways views of the buds themselves. I gave no rating to the image, since almost all its interest is in its mathematics. But don't downplay the math interest. To make things much clearer than I can explain in words, gradually decrease the value of the real(p1) parameter from 90 to zero in increments. (Keep the imag(p2) parameter unchanged.) The images are very fast and the process will take little time. By the time the value is reduced to 50 the destination will be apparent. Doing a 360-degree rotation would make an interesting animation, but I doubt that I'll get the chance. (Decreasing the imag(p2) parameter of today's image to zero while leaving the real(p1) parameter unchanged brings us to the Elliptic orientation, but that's another story.) To create today's image, I oriented the 4-D Julibrot figure so that the imaginary Z-axis is perpendicular to the Mandelbrot set on the screen and ignored the parts of the Julibrot that did not fit into our 3-space, leaving an imaginary invisible 3-D slice of the Julibrot intersecting the screen. Then I rotated the screen image around the line perpendicular to the X-axis at the point -0.2. The resulting image is what would be seen by a viewer located in the plane of the screen just to the left or right of the screen when the invisible 3-D slice was sliced at the point of -0.2 on the real-C axis. All this talk does not mean the image is a slow one. In fact, it finishes in a lightning fast 5 seconds. I am improving deep zooming in Fracton. Until now, there was a maximum magnification limit of about 1e300. Now that has been increased to 1e5000. While testing the new capability, I tried a deep zoom into a fractal on the FractInt Deep Zoom web page. The fractal was called 233 because it had a magnification of 1e233. I zoomed into a "two way symmetry" until I found the two armed oval this added to the fractal. That wasn't quite deep enough to test the new capability so I kept zooming until I got to this 4 armed oval at a magnification of 4e355. FOTD -- September 03, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a minibrot in the center of the nuclear blast that made yesterday's FOTD image a blast. Apparently, conditions at the center of nuclear explosions are so extreme that not even the laws of mathematics can survive undamaged. Check today's minibrot for a sample of mathematical damage. The minibrot in today's image is of order 2.000001, which means it should be barely distinguishable from an everyday quadratic minibrot, but today's minibrot looks nothing at all like a normal minibrot. It appears to be eroded and moth-eaten, most likely from the intense heat of nuclear fission. The same scrambled confusion exists in the surroundings, which appear to be trying to reach the usual 4,8,16... series, but are falling apart before getting there. It's a good thing the minibrot is about at the limit of resolution. Who knows what might lie deeper in its basin of attraction. The rating of a 7 is about average for FOTD images. The name "Outcome Infinite" means not quite as much as it implies. The calculation time of just under 7 minutes is slow by conventional math standards. Thank goodness for the web sites. FOTD -- October 24, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the parent fractal that results when Z^(1.1) is subtracted from Z^(-5.5) and straight C is added. This parent consists of a Mandeloid rotated so that its normally west end points southeast. Its main period-2 bud is quite large, while its East Valley is shrunken. A large blob surrounded by fields of smaller blobs lies just beyond the east valley. The image for today lies in one of these debris fields. I named the image "Blobs in the Night", mostly because of the rather somber color scheme, which despite its brilliant highlights, still creates an impression of night. I almost named it something like 'Bursting Bubbles', but decided not to when I found no bubbles that are actually bursting. The rating of a 7 is adequate, but if I had put more effort into the colors, I might have raised it to an 8. The 45-second calculation time will cause no distress. This time is an estimate of the time the image would take to finish on the 2000mhz machine. It took 2-1/2 minutes on the 200mhz unit.
