FOTD -- April 09, 2012 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in an oversized Mandelbrot set with quintic corruption in its depths. The location is on the northeast shore line of the large period-2 bud, near the beginning of Seahorse Valley. I have been discussing such mixed-exponent images with corrupted depths so fully in recent FOTD's that there is little left to say about them, but whenever I find something I consider worthy of mention, I'll report it in the discussion. The name "Quadratic Pentagon" refers to the quintic corruption, which shows itself spectacularly in today's image in both the number of elements surrounding the central minibrot and in the minibrot itself, which is fully quintic. The rating of an 8 shows my satisfaction with the image, and also my satisfaction with the signs that we might be pulling out of the latest fractal drought. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes will pass quickly. Checking the image on one of the web sites will be equally quick and a bit more fun. FOTD -- April 08, 2012 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: As is apparent by now, there was no FOTD for April 7, nor will there ever be one. FL and I decided to take the day off and go out and have a good time. Today's image is named "Metempsychosis". This does not refer to some weird mental illness, it is another name for reincarnation or the transfer of souls from one physical body to another. (I leave it to the individual fractalist to decide exactly what a soul is.) I gave the image this name because it is a rebirth of the numbers of the most recent image, the one for April 6, which I quit working on a bit too soon. Today's image is a simple but dramatic recoloring of the same image. Actually, it is not exactly the same image. The image of April 6 had no logmap in effect, while today's version has a logmap value of 375. But it is close enough to be virtually identical. The color palette, which contrasts deep blues with fiery reds and oranges, is not a new one. It has often been used, but it raises the rating from a humdrum 6 to a very respectful 8. The calculation time is the same as that of the April 6 image -- a slightly slow 3-1/2 minutes. The web sites can eliminate the wait however. FOTD -- April 06, 2012 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is the last in the series based on the parent fractal of April 2. Actually, the series has been a disappointment. Without bias, I can state that they all look pretty much the same to me. Today, for our final venture, we wander into the depths of the chaos southeast of the main Mandeloid of the parent. Unfortunately, what we find there is more of the same mixture of not-very-attractive clumps of chaos and curving filaments. The name "Midnight Dreamworld" is an admitted effort to make a silk purse from a sow's ear. But the fancy words cannot raise the image above the rating of a humdrum 6. The colors, with their effect of oil on a wet pavement, are not bad. More work might have made them better however. The calculation time of 3-1/2 minutes is more than the image is worth. Luckily, the web sites again charge to the rescue. FOTD 05-04-12 (The Richest Field [8])

FOTD -- April 05, 2012 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today, we take the third and so far the best venture into the parent fractal of April 2. We explore the area around the large Julia-like hole just southeast of the circular main bay of the parent. Today's scene is not in this hole itself, but a little southwest of it. The image raises hopes that far better scenes might lie in the parent fractal, which at first glance seems too chaotic to hold much of value. I'll stick with the parent for a few more days, then, if nothing much turns up, I'll move on. I named the image "The Richest Field" because of the over- abundance of intense colors. These colors, combined with the near-circular ring of eight open areas around the central minibrot, earn a rating of an honorable 8. The calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes seems a fair price for the image, but sometimes fractalists are simply too busy to spare even this time. Here is where the web sites come to the rescue. FOTD 04-04-12 (Stars and Flowers [7.5])

FOTD -- April 04, 2012 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD is late. Another of those 'sudden unexpected graphic design rushes' is to blame. But here the image is in all its unglory, a little better late than never. I named the image "Stars and Flowers" when I came up with no better name. The image takes us to the small object just below the brilliant green patch in the southwest corner of the parent fractal, which is the creative source of all the infinite worlds lying withing it. This, the second minibrot scene I have found in the parent, resembles yesterday's image a bit too closely for comfort. Maybe I chose the wrong creative source to dive into. The parent must have far more variety in it than I have stumbled upon so far, however. Tomorrow's image will be the third dive into the same parent, and I can guarantee that it will at least be different, if not better. The rating of a 7-1/2 includes a half point for the extra coloring effort. Believe it or not, I did put extra effort into the coloring. The calculation time of 3-3/4 minutes borders slowness. But the FOTD web sites are always ready to ease impatience.
