FOTD 11-05-12 (Erupting Colors [7.5])

FOTD -- May 11, 2012 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates a 7-1/2. Because of its excess busyness I could not rate it at an 8, but I did award myself an extra half-point for the colors. Extra color work was necessary. For some reason, this particular image is unusually difficult to color. The generating expression is the same as yesterday's, but with the absolute value of the second exponent of Z lowered from -5 to -0.5. This change clears most of the debris from the main bay of the underlying Mandelbrot set of the parent fractal, while at the same time eliminating much of the original Mandelbrot outline. An obvious minibrot lies at the northern edge of the remaining main bay. Today's scene lies in the detail surrounding this minibrot. The name "Erupting Colors" indicates that I consider the colors a bit too gaudy. The calculation time of 4-1/3 minutes is too slow to be a bargain, but the calculation can be avoided by visiting the web sites. Be awesome! FOTD -- May 10, 2012 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD rating has slipped to a 7, but I assure all concerned FOTD fans that the drop is temporary and not a sign of things to come. The parent fractal is a variation of yesterday's parent, with only the portions changed. Today we mix the same 0.25 part of Z^(2) with a much reduced 0.5 part of Z^(-5) before we add straight C on each iteration. The change opens up more of the underlying Mandelbrot set, which now is much more recognizable. A large area of (-5) stuff still fills much of the main bay, with today's scene located in the Seahorse Valley of a partly obscured minibrot on the northeast edge of this 'stuff'. The name "In a Vague Valley" refers to this almost totally obscured underlying valley. I retained most of yesterday's colors, making only a few changes to increase the contrast between the outer grayness and the brilliantly colored fractal object lying diagonally across the frame. This object resembles a Julia set of the Seahorse Valley type, which is not surprising, since it lies in the Seahorse Valley of the partially hidden minibrot. These partially hidden minibrots pose a puzzle. I suspect that the generating expression has a second critical point and that if Z were initialized to that other starting point, the hidden minibrot would be revealed in its full glory. So far however, I have been unable to find one of these hidden minibrots. The calculation time of today's image is a rather slow 3-1/2 minutes, making the FOTD web sited a good choice. FOTD -- May 09, 2012 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the same parent fractal as yesterday's, and like yesterday's it rates an 8. The scene is located in the Seahorse Valley area of the oversized Mandelbrot outline that makes up the parent fractal. The color palette is virtually the same as yesterday's, with a few minor tweakings because of the different magnitude. The name "A Ride to Daybreak" might mean something, but if it does, I doubt that it has any connection to the image. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes will pass in a flash. Those who dislike flashes may avoid them by checking the web sites. FOTD -- May 08, 2012 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: We're on a roll. Despite its somber colors, today's image rates another 8, and it was created by the warhorse MandAutoCritInZ formula. The parent fractal came about when I combined 0.25 part of Z^(2) with 4 parts of Z^(-5) and added straight (C) on each iteration. This parent appears as the rough outline of an oversized Mandel- brot set, with large irregular-shaped open areas where Seahorse Valley would be expected, and a minibrot at the spot where the large main-spike minibrot would be expected. Most of the main bay area is filled in with debris, but a small, somewhat distor- ted Mandeloid lies in the area of East Valley, with the East Valley of this small Mandeloid merging with the East Valley of the entire outline. Today's scene lies in the interior of this valley. I named the image "Circular Square" because the brighter area surrounding the central minibrot appears to be a square starting to change into a circle. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is brief enough to avoid all risk of impatience. The FOTD web sites will bring the risk even lower, but there is still that parameter file to be run. FOTD -- May 07, 2012 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I might have been a bit too liberal when I rated today's image at an 8. I really can find little in it to warrant such a rating. But a blue and yellow color scheme has always been one of my favorites, so the rating will remain. The parent fractal came about when I combined 2 parts of Z^(-1.7) with 1/2 part of Z^(-7.7) before adding (1/C) on each iteration. This parent consists of an oversized three-lobed main bay with a large bud on the eastern side of the bay. This bud is set off by a valley that breaks into two branches as it approaches its point. Today's scene is located between these ridges. The name "Jolly Old Minibrot" reflects a bit of high spirits I thought I saw in the image as I was searching for a name, not the mood I was in when I found the name. (My personal mood always tends to the darker side of things.) The good news of the day is that the image is a fast one. Only 55 precious seconds will elapse between striking the <enter> key and hearing the 'calculation finished' chimes. The fractal cats found the temperature near perfect however, and were undecided whether to sleep stretched out or curled up. The humans had just another typical work day, with little out of the ordinary to report. The next FOTD will be posted before long. After a little storme with a menger sponge i had to double my effort at fractal.
