FOTD -- March 28, 2013 (Rating 8.5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's long-awaited FOTD image rates a solid 8-1/2, most of
which is due to the coloring. The striking colors were not a
result of any artistic talent. They are a result of programmed
randomness, though I did give myself a 1/2 point bonus for being
the one who struck the <enter> key.
The image shows a scene in a minor minibrot on the main stem of
the grossly oversized parent Mandelbrot set. This minibrot is
halfway through the process of morphing from quadratic to
quintic, with today's scene located in debris on the degenerate
northwest shore line of the minibrot's main bay.
I named the image "Quadraquintic Brot" because the obviously
quintic minibrot at the center is surrounded (beyond the frame
edges) by purely quadratic stuff.
The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes will pass in a flash. To
avoid being dazzled, I recommend visiting one of the web sites.

A blustery mix of sun and clouds with a temperature of 48F +9C
made today a disappointing one for those impatient for spring to
arrive. The fractal cat was equally disappointed with the
come-and-go sunshine on his shelf, and soon retired to my
favorite chair. Meanwhile the humans continued working on the
work room.
The next FOTD will be posted when the work room work is
finished, most likely in 24 hours. Until whenever, take care,
and those who think fracking for natural gas and oil is harmful
to the environment should calculate the number of square miles
that would need to be covered with solar panels to supply an
equal amount of energy. People should do the math before clamor-
ing for solar energy! And monstrous wind turbines not only kill
the birds that fly into them, they create subsonic pressure
waves that are disorienting to both animals and humans within a
half mile or so.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image takes us on a trip into a higher dimension. The
scene is in a valley of a sub-bud on the north shore of the main
bud of the HyperMandelbrot set.
The ill-defined thing at the center is a potential minibrot that
has not yet fully formed but is well on the way.
The name "The Missing Mandy" refers to the not quite fully
formed minibrot at the center of the image. (To reveal the
actual minibrot raise the maxiter to 2500 and change all
parameters to zero.)
The rating of 7-1/2 is boringly average. The calculation time
of 2 minutes ia about average also. Due to technical computer
difficulties there will be a delay of perhaps a day or two
before the image is posted to the official web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
as soon as a computer problem is solved.
It will be posted sooner at:

Light snow fell most all day here at Fractal Central today, but
with a temperature of 36F +2C it melted as fast as it fell. The

the day thinking of better days.
The next FOTD will be posted in the proper time. Until then,
take care, and when light battles darkness, the light always

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image shows a hyper scene in Scepter Valley of the
HyperMandelbrot set. I named it "Hyper Hi-Jinks" because that's
what I see happening in the image. The rating of 7-1/2 is about
average for these hyper images.
Most of the features inside the outer circle consist of higher-
dimensional stuff that lies in the HyperMandelbrot part of the
Julibrot. To see the pure but under-resolved Mandelbrot scene
with the minibrot undistorted change all the parameters to zero.
I have ideas of what might be happening in these weird images
created by the HyperMandelbrot2 formula, but as of today, it
still doesn't add up. I still wonder whether it's some kind of
mathematical quirk, but many of the things I find with the
HyperMandelbrot2 formula are consistent with the overlapping
images created by the hypercomplex formula hard coded in
Fractint.
Today's image calculates in 45 seconds, which leaves lots of
time for other activities. And the web sites are always there
with the finished image.

Another un-springlike day passed unappreciated here at Fractal
Central today. The mix of sun and clouds with snow flurries and
a temperature of 37F +3C felt more like late December than early
spring. The fractal cat, who seemed notably unconcerned with
the weather, spent most of his time playing, eating and
sleeping. The humans spent the day fighting a computer virus.
We finally won. (We hope.)
The next FOTD will be posted in two days, since we are taking a
trip back to Old Fractal Central tomorrow. Until next time,
take care, and all the world's problems could be solved if they
would just listen to me.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
One of the more unusual things I have discovered while exploring
the hyperMandelbrot set is the predominance of tentacles.
Sometimes these tentacles have definite points of convergence;
at other times they simply wander aimlessly or turn back on
themselves. Today's image shows a nest of these tentacles, with
the longer ones converging on a point and the shorter ones
wandering aimlessly.
There also appears to be something more solid hidden in the
background of the image, but for the time at least, this hidden
thing will remain unseen.
The name of the image is not surprisingly "Tentacles". The
rating of an 8 indicates that I consider the image to be one of
the best of the past week or so.
The calculation time of 3-3/4 minutes is slow however, but this
problem may be remedied by checking the image on one of the web
sites.

With a temperature of 34F +1C, biting winds, dark scudding
clouds, a few flakes of snow, and a sun that did nothing on the
rare occasions when it appeared, today felt like a return to
January here at Fractal Central. The fractal cat complained of
too few bursts of sun and decided to exhaust his energy begging
for an extra serving of turkey and cheddar. The humans had an
average day, though FL is becoming impatient for gardening

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image illustrates what I take to be a bud in the
hypercomplex Mandelbrot set. But the bud is not perfect. The
straight arms converging on the mouth of the bud show that the
bud is not a critical one. In fact, I changed the starting
point to 0,0.3,0.3,0 to see what other slices might look like.
I doubt that the hypercomplex set has a single critical point.
The hyperset is actually a four-dimensional hyperslice through
the 8-D Julibrot. But enough of the bud shows through the
converging arms to give an idea of the gothic-arch shape of the
four-dimensional hypercomplex buds.
I gave the image no rating since almost all its impact is in the
mathematical aspect, and its color leaves much that could be
improved. The name "Hyperbud" describes the scene. The
calculation time of 4-3/4 minutes is rather slow. To avoid
delay I recommend viewing the finished image on one of the web

Today's image shows what I take to be parts of minibrots in an
East Valley section of the Hypermandelbrot set. Since the
HyperMandelbrot set is four-dimensional, its minibrots must be
four-dimensional also, which means it will never be possible to
show all of one on a flat two-dimensional screen.
The name "Hyper-Minibrot" simply describes the image. The

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a scene in the eastern part of the main bud of
the HyperMandelbrot set, just west of Seahorse Valley. I posted
it as a FOTD because of its interesting repeating patterns,
which almost but not quite repeat identically.
The image rates a 7.5 and would have rated higher if similar
near-repeating patterns were not so plentiful in the classic
Mandelbrot set.
The name "8-Dimensional Landscape" indicates that the image is a
slice of the 4-dimensional HyperMandelbrot set, which itself is
a 4-D slice through the center of the 8-D HyperJulibrot figure.
I am beginning to make some sense of these hyper images, but I
still have a long way to go before everything adds up.
The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes borders on slowness. The
web sites can bring relief however.

Today brought thick clouds then heavy snow to Fractal Central,
while the temperature hovered just at freezing. As of post
time, about 2 inches (5cm) had piled up. The fractal cat took a
quick glance out the shelf window, then settled to sleep. The
humans spent the day getting the routine things done.
The next FOTD will be posted in a reasonable time. Until reason
prevails, take care, and take time to think things out.

FOTD -- March 17, 2013 (Rating 7.5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today is Saint Patrick's Day here at Fractal Central, and over
the rest of the world as well. In honor of the occasion, I
added a touch of green to today's image, which shows a partially
eroded minibrot on the northwest shore line of the main bay of
the HyperMandelbrot set, which lies in an 8-dimensional Julibrot
that I have no intention of getting into.
Change the real(p3) or real(p4) (or both) parameters to zero and
see the minibrot before it was eroded. Surprisingly, the
maxiter is now far too low to show the uneroded minibrot, which
indicates that everything within the outer circle of the image
is new stuff existing only in the higher-dimensional part of the
Julibrot.
The rating of 7-1/2 includes a bonus for honoring the day. The
name "Green for the Day" acknowledges that it is a special day
for the Irish. The calculation time of 6-1/4 minutes is slow.
Luckily, the web sites can relieve fractal slowness.

Cloudy skies and a temperature of 39F +4C made the outdoors
rather unpleasant here at Fractal Central today. The fractal
cat and fractal humans had a typical uneventful day indoors.
The next FOTD will be posted in the proper time frame. Until
whenever that is, take care, and be of sound mind and body, but
don't let the mind and body get too noisy.

FOTD -- March 16, 2013 (Rating 7.5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image continues the adventures in the land that is not
supposed to exist but has not heard the bad news and exists
anyway. The scene of the image is at the pseudo-origin of a
minibrot, which is the spot at the center of the main bay of the
minibrot.
I rated the image at 7-1/2, mostly because of the extra work I
put into the coloring. Most of the color palette however was
lifted from the FOTD image of March 4.
I can say nothing about the number series of the circular
elements surrounding the center of the image because I know
nothing about the series.
The name "Into a Magic Land" is a bit overblown, though in some
ways, fractals are quite magical.
The calculation time of 3-2/3 minutes is slower than some recent
images but still well within reason for today's image.

Moderate to heavy snow fell here at Fractal Central today, but
the temperature of 34F +1C kept it from building up on the
pavements. On the grass however, about 3 inches or 8cm
accumulated. The fractal cat spent much of his time watching
the pigeons flapping around on the outside window sill. The
humans spent the day doing human things.
The next FOTD will be posted in the proper time. Until whenever
that might be, take care, and if everyone knows how to solve the
world's problems, why do the problems still exist?.

FOTD -- March 15, 2013 (Rating ?)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a variation on a minibrot. I named it
"Minibrot Madness" because the minibrot is unlike any I have
seen so far in Fractal Land. Actually, the image is a
continuation of the recent explorations in the 4-D
HyperMandelbrot set created by hypercomplex numbers.
The 'stuff' condensing around the edges of the bays and buds of
the minibrot is just as much a mystery as the eroded 'stuff'
that obscures the minibrot in the image of March 04. It has no
right to be there, but there it is anyway, violating all the
rules of common-sense math.
This 'stuff' is sensitive to the value of the real(p3) and
real(p4) parameters. And if the maxiter is increased, the
'stuff' expands and soon fills in the remaining open areas
inside the minibrot.
The image might be a real fractal; it might be an artifact of
math imprecision. But until I find out exactly what is going on
with these hyper-images, I will rate them with a question mark.
One thing not in doubt is the speed of the parameter file, which
on the modern day speed-demons will finish in 45 seconds or
less. Of course, the simplest way to see the image is always to
check it on one of the FOTD web sites.

Clouds and a temperature of 45F +7C prevailed today here at
Fractal Central, while the fractal cat prevailed in my favorite
chair. The humans simply prevailed, which requires no further
elaboration.
The next FOTD will be posted in the appropriate time. Until
whenever, take care, and they say heaven exists in four-
dimensional space. No wonder we can't spot it with our three-
dimensional scientific devices. All we can see are 3-D slices.
