FOTD -- July 01, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image combines Z^(37) elements and Z^(2) elements, with
the higher order elements dominating the center of the image and
the quadratic elements dominating the outer parts. All this
action lies in the East Valley area of the parent fractal, which
is another oversized Mandelbrot set.
The name "Primed for Action" came to mind when I realized that
the number 37 is probably the first number a person thinks of
when he is asked to name a prime number between one and fifty.
The art and math ratings are both 7 -- FOTD average.
The calculation time of 2-1/3 minutes is a bit on the slow side.
Luckily, the web sites are there to rescue one from wasted time.

Lots of clouds and occasional showers marked the day here at
Fractal Central, while the temperature of 82F 28C and high
humidity made it feel quite tropical. The fractal cat and semi-
fractal humans took it in stride.
The next FOTD will be posted, that much is sure. The question
is exactly when. Until whenever, take care, and with so many
high-profile trials on TV, a person needs a score card to know
who they should consider guilty or innocent.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Here's a quick fractal to calculate quickly then gaze at in awe
and wonder.
The parent fractal is an oversized Mandelbrot set corrupted in
its depths by cubic energies. Today's scene lies on the main
spike of the parent, in the largest minibrot beyond the main
minibrot. This parent minibrot is about half way morphed from
quadratic to cubic, with today's scene located in the debris
between the two main buds.
The name "Cubic Conundrum" sounds interesting, but means nothing
special.
Both the artistic and math values are a bit above average,
making it worth the effort to spend 30 seconds or so calculating
the scene. Non-calculating fractal fans may find relief at the
web sites.

The next FOTD will be the one for July 1. Until then, take
care, and don't look here for a clever closing remark. I'm not
feeling very clever today.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is named "Ground Base". The name has nothing to
do with a mountain climbing expedition, it is simply a name I
grabbed out of the air and gave to the image.
The generating expression is rather unusual. It adds 6.1 parts
of Z^(0.1) to a whopping 6100 parts of Z^(100) on each iteration
to make a fractal resembling a heart lying on its side. Today's
scene lies near the bottom (east) point of the heart-shaped bay.
The artistic worth is a 7, the math value, a 6. The calculation
time of 1-1/4 minutes will pass in a flash. But the flash may
be avoided by checking the web sites.

The parent fractal of today's image is a Mandelbrot set
corrupted in its depths by cubic energies. The image is located
between the two East Valleys of a larger minibrot that lies in
an elephant trunk on the south shore line of the single East
Valley of the parent Mandelbrot set.
The name "Salad is Served" came about when I was reminded of one
of the light feminine salads FL always orders when we eat out.
Of course, since I am not a rabbit, I do not eat leafy weeds. I
order masculine foods heavy in meat and starch such as meat loaf
and sweet potatoes.
Today's image rates a slightly above average 7 for both the
artistic and mathematical aspects. I have already explained the
art part -- the image looks like a salad. But the math part is
a bit more subtle. The six strawberry clusters surrounding the
cubic minibrot at the center are arranged in three groups of two
-- a perfect blending of the quadratic and cubic elements. And
the strawberry rings increase in complexity as they approach the
minibrot.
The calculation takes 45 seconds to complete on the average SOTA
desktop machine, and far longer if it will run at all on a
'smart phone', 'tablet' or 'I-pad'. Regardless, the finished
image is available for instant viewing on the FOTD web sites.

always so easy to fool ourselves however.

FOTD -- June 23, 2013 (Rating A-6,M-9)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image has a math rating of 9, which is an exceptional
rating for the mathematical aspect of an image. The rating is
based on the lack of discontinuities. All images that have a
fractal exponent of Z in their generating expression must
contain discontinuities. There is no way around it.
Well, maybe there is! Today's image takes us into a area of
debris polluting the large northern bud of the large minibrot
on the main stem of the parent Mandelbrot set, which is
corrupted in its depths by Z^(3.5) energies. The minibrot at
the center is purely of order 3.5, but checking the elements
beyond the minibrot, I see a ring of seven, arranged nearly
perfectly, with no discontinuities in sight.
It's impossible, but there it is, for all the fractal world to
stare at in awe and wonder. But don't be too shocked.
Discontinuities actually *are* in the image, but I have arranged
the colors so that the breaks are invisible.
Despite the exceptional math interest, the artistic aspect of
the scene is boringly average. The rating of a 6 will win
neither praise nor trophies, but the image is still worth the 50
seconds required to calculate it, if only to see a symmetrical
Z^(3.5) fractal not filled with breaks. Checking the web sites
will eliminate the calculation nuisance.

Typical midsummer conditions prevailed here at Fractal Central
today, with mostly clear blue skies, a hot sun, and a sweltering
temperature of 90F 32C. Early in the afternoon the fractal cat

FOTD -- June 20.2013 (Rating A-7,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is evaporated, which means that all the 'outside'
stuff, from which the points eventually will escape, has
vanished and been replaced by a screen consisting of totally
'inside' stuff, from which no points will ever escape. This bit
of mayhem is a result of the ridiculous bailout radius of
10^100, better known as one-googol, which has been set by the
imag(p3) parameter.
A flat screenfull of all-inside stuff can be quite boring, but
the active inside fills can often bring these 'dead' images to
life. In today's image the 'bof61' fill does the job.
The formula behind the madness subtracts 2.72 parts of Z^(-2.7)
from 8.5 parts of Z^(-1.6) then adds (1/C) on each iteration.
This creates a parent fractal with X-axis symmetry, which
resembles a Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees with its west end
facing east and its normal east end replaced by a large open
bay. A kind of double crescent moon lies in this open area, and
today's scene lies in one of these crescents.
The name "In Search of Reality" does not refer to one of the
current crop of contrived 'reality' TV shows. It refers to the
questionable reality of things like fractals, sub-atomic
particles, and of course ghosts.
The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is slow enough to make the
calculation a bother. But the web sites can bring a miracle
cure.
Forget about calculating the image on that DOS-challenged
machine. Let me be the one who does the work. Check the

a temperature of 82F 28C and a Photoshop-blue sky decorated with
the kind of clouds that have faces in them. The fractal cat
slept all afternoon while the humans went on a short trip in the

The next FOTD will be posted before too long, most likely within
24 hours. Until then, take care, and skeptics know that truly
paranormal things such as ghosts are all in the mind. At the
same time, some people have already experienced the paranormal.
But it's a trick of their minds, and they must be shown their
understandable mistakes. To hear scientific claims that make
ghosts and hauntings seem like everyday normality, they should
talk with a cosmologist or a physicist.

FOTD -- June 21, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is one of the fieriest of all time. And for good
reason. The generating expression adds 666 parts of Z^(666) to
(1/Z) before adding straight C on each iteration, and we know
what happens to those who dabble with the number 666. They
become ensnared by the beast and then spend all eternity with
him in the fiery pit down below, which I hear is hotter than a
nuclear furnace. Today's image gives us just a glimpse of that
pit. (Good gosh, I hope I don't end up down there!)
The name "Four Alarm Minibrot" refers to the fires in the fiery
furnace. I have no idea if a minibrot might lie in the midst of
the actual inferno, but I do see one at the center of today's
image.
The image's artistic rating of an 8 reflects the extra effort
expended creating the effect of a nuclear fiery pit. The math
rating of a modest 6 indicates that nothing very unusual is
going on in the math aspect of the image.
The calculation time of a mere 30 seconds will pass virtually
un-noticed. But the annoyance of setting up and runnind a DOS
parameter file may be eliminated by checking the image on one of
the web sites.
Calculation may be avoided by checking the FOTD web site at:

The first official day of summer brought typical summer weather
to Fractal Central. The temperature reached a moderately hot
84F 29C under a hazy sun. The fractal cat wanted the cool air
turned on, but we humans are putting it off as long as possible.
A lot of the winter chill is still trapped in the heavy brick
walls of FC.
The next FOTD will be posted within a reasonable time, which is
most often but not always 24 hours. Until whenever, take care,
and the world certainly has changed since I was a kid, but I
have yet to decide if the change is for the better or worse.

FOTD -- June 19, 2013 (No Rating)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image shows an old friend in a new light. The old
friend is the curious Julia Z^(2.003)+C rectangle, which in
today's image is located at the point where the arms branch out
from the main trunk of the vaguely human figure. Actually there
are an infinity of rectangles in the image, so don't try to
count the extras.
The new light is the fact that the image is not a pure Julia
scene. It is double rotated 0.03,0.03 degrees, or 1.8,1.8
minutes, from the true Julia orientation. (Double rotation is a
strange motion that is possible only in space of more than three
dimensions.) 1.8 minutes of rotation does not seem to be much
of a change, but when it is done very close to the Julia
orientation it makes a big difference. In today's image it has
totally obliterated the left half of the humanish figure.
This rectangle is one of the first things I found when Fractint
gained the ability to calculate fractional exponents, which I
think was in 1992. The rectangle struck me at once. It has no
right to be there. It just doesn't make sense. But there it is
anyway, for all the world to see.
Since the rectangle as well as the human-like figure has
appeared so often as a FOTD, I could give the image no rating.
It's still kind of pleasant to look at however, and with a
calculation time of 25 seconds, it will cause no impatient
fidgeting.

Near perfect weather made everyone happy here at Fractal Central
today. The sky was a clear Photoshop (or old Kodachrome) blue
with only a few small puffy white clouds, while the temperature
reached a comfortable high of 77F 25C. The fractal cat made it
through the day in true feline fashion, alternating between
playing, eating and sleeping. The fractal humans had an average
day, with nothing out of the ordinary to report, which is boring
to report but was pleasant.
The next FOTD is coming, and will be posted in a day or two.
Until whenever that great moment arrives, take care, and what
happened to the squatter who was dis-satisfied with his lot?

FOTD -- June 18, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image came about when I mixed 1.11 parts of Z^(-11.1)
with 11.1 parts of Z^(-1.11) before adding (1/C) on each
iteration. These parameters are entirely whimsical, with no
special significance. The unusually large bailout radius is
needed to avoid cutting off the oversized parent created by the
parameters.
This parent fractal is immense, but when all of it is squeezed
onto the screen, it appears as a typical double-negative
exponent thing with many odd-shaped bays and satellite rings.
Today's image lies, as do so many FOTD fractal images, in a
valley in one of the many bays of the parent.
The name "Strawberry Circle" might seem to refer to a springtime
festival, but it actually refers to the pinkish ring on the teal
background surrounding the central minibrot.
The artistic value of 7 and math value of 6 (all values strictly
IMO) are near average, meaning the image is at least worth a
look, but don't expect to be knocked over.
The calculation time of 6-1/4 minutes is slow, but remember the
old saying -- 'anything worth having is worth waiting for'. Of
course, this wait may be avoided by checking the image on one of
the web sites.

The day began with a notice of computer CMOS battery failure
here at Fractal Central. At least I know how to correct this
problem, and I'll correct it as soon as I get around to it. The
day's weather featured lots of clouds and humidity, with a
temperature of 81F 27C. Rain threatened, but as of post time
never appeared. The fractal cat passed the day checking for
unwanted cats. When he was not checking, he took it easy eating
and sleeping. The humans kept busy doing human activities.
The next FOTD will be posted in the proper time, which usually
means 24 hours. Until whenever, take care, and how will we ever
find the resources to get men on Mars? We will be far too busy
fighting climate change.

FOTD -- June 17, 2013 (Rating A-9,M-6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image has an art rating of a 9. This is because I went
out of my way to find a coloring that would make the image
resemble a real 3-D monolith. The rating shows that I consider
my efforts pretty successful.
The math rating is a humdrum 6. After all, how interesting can
the expression Z^(1.009)+C be regardless of how far up the
hyperladder it is calculated. As a matter of interest, today's
image was calculated 120 levels up the ladder.
The parent fractal is a grossly oversized thing resembling a
primitive stone arrowhead plunging back to earth. Today's scene
lies in the chaos on the eastern edge of the arrowhead.
The name "The Lost Monument" implies that regardless of how far
one might search, he would never find the scene depicted in the
image, since it exists only in the world of fractals as well as
in the mind. I leave it to the individual fractalist to decide
if mathematical fractals and human thoughts are to be considered
in any way real.
The calculation time of 6-1/2 minutes is slow enough to bring
impatience to the more restless fractalists, so hooray for the
web sites, which can bring relief.
Find relief from mathematical anxiety by viewing the finished
image on the official FOTD web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
Extra happiness may be found by viewing the hi-def rendering at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
Total bliss lies on the web site at:
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
where the FOTD back images are posted.
Rather sultry conditions prevailed here at Fractal Central
today, with partly cloudy skies, some humidity and a temperature
of 86F 30C. The fractal cat felt playful in the morning, but
calmed just after noon to enjoy a quiet afternoon sleeping. The
humans had a busy day, with FL working in her garden while I
supervised.
The next FOTD will be posted in a period of time that will seem
to pass in a flash. Until then, take care, and before a problem
can be solved, the nature of the problem must first be
recognized.
