Fractint Formula Collection

I have collected almost all existing Fractint formulas and organized them with Orgform (Version3.3). In total, there are more than 19300 formulas - without duplicates. (I am not 100% sure that I have taken into account all multifractal formulas. For these formulas I have created a special file, MULT.FRM. Of course, missing formulas can also be inserted manually at any time.) Some formula files had to be split because in some cases Orgform 3.3 can not write all existing formula entries associated with a first letter of the formula name into a single file. Of course, since (starting with the 90s) I searched thousands of postings for frm entries, I can not completely rule out that there are some mistakes (for example, confusion of frm and par entries). But I think the collection now available is a good basis for creating an even better and more complete formula collection. Any suggestion where to upload the ZIP file (about 3.7 MB) to so that everyone can access it? Hans-Joachim Metzger

Mark, Bud, If you are trying to install and run DOS Fractint Ver 20.04 in Windows 10, that's not going to work as is. You have a few options to run DOS Fractint or a Windows-compatible Fractint-type program in Windows 10: Run DOS Fractint "wrapped" in other software environments compatible with Windows 10 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------- - Install a virtual environment in Windows 10 -- like Oracle's free VirtualBox; then Install Windows XP in your virtual machine; then install DOS Fractint in Win XP. - You could also try running DOS Fractint in a version of DOSBox (running in Windows 10.) Quite a few people like this combination. Tim Wegner recommends the DOSBox Daum version of DOSBox. Windows-compatible Fractint-type programs ----------------------------------------------------------- - You could try Richard's Windows 10 version of Fractint, now called: "Iterated Dynamics" (although he states that it's not for general distribution). It has some features that have not been fully developed. I've used it a tremendous amount -- with a few work-arounds - I also don't use all of its features. Its interface is effectively DOS Fractint's. - You could try Jonathan Osuch's FractSDL Windows version of Fractint, which is also "still in development." It is a very serviceable version -- also with an interface that's essentially DOS Fractint's. Running DOS Fractint in a DOSBox or under Windows XP in VirtualBox give you the original Fractint. Does anyone know which of the many different versions of fractint going around have full implementation of the sound features that are in the DOS versions? I use DOSBox SVN-Daum to run fractint v.20.04.14 and all the sound features work as expected, but I was wondering if any of the other versions have sound working? The version of Fractint I used for BOO! is a non-standard one -- Richard's Fractint for Windows beta 5 -- and, unfortunately, your complete fractal appears instantaneously. It seems that the functionality of "orbitdelay=" is not yet working (or implemented) yet. For a pleasing rate of "pixel plotting speed" -- and music -- one certainly needs to have the orbit delay controlled correctly. When I 1st tried Richard's version of Fractint several years ago, it dropped right into Windows and started running like a champ. It correctly calculated essentially all of Jim Muth's fractals -- and my many variations on them, so I was content to keep using it over the years. More recently, I've worked a little bit with Jonathan on his Windows SDL library-based version of Fractint. . . . . SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) is a cross-platform . . . . software development library designed to provide . . . . a hardware abstraction layer for computer . . . . multimedia hardware components. And even more recently, Albrecht Niekamp helped me set up Oracle's free Virtual Machine environment, in which I installed WinXP -- which can natively run Fractint in its included DOS environment. So, like your DOS Fractint running in DOSBox SVN-Daum, I now have access to an environment that can run the original DOS Fractint on my Windows 10 computer. But I prefer not having to navigate the hoops of the VM & WinXP to run Fractint and get the images back from that environment -- so I usually run Richard's native Windows version, which works for most Fractint PARs. Having never used fractint for windows I am not sure what functionality it has. Do any or all of the sound parameters and functions work? Show orbit, orbit delay, etc.? I have found that DOSBox SVN-Daum provides all the functionality that I had in DOS plus the advantage of being able to emulate many DOS environments. I have absolutely no need for rendering speed - to the contrary. Even on the slowest of systems I have always made ample use of orbit delay. For what it's worth, on my Windows 10 system, Windows defender did not complain about ManpWin64bit, and I had no trouble installing the 64 bit version on my system. Also, at Paul's request, I deleted the ManpWin executables in the fractint.net experimental directory, and added links to Paul's versions. Of course this makes sense so that I don't have to update the files whenever Paul makes a new release. See : https://fractint.org/ftp/experimental/ManpWIN.html and appreciate my brilliant html! :-) Also, a tiny footnote probably of interest to almost no one except the geekiest among you . Fractint.net and fractint.org were down since yesterday evening until an hour ago because I am compulsive about updating, and I saw that Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS was available. I ran the do-release-upgrade script that is supposed to be an in-place upgrade, and when I rebooted apache2 was running. This would be fine if I was using apache2, but I am using nginx, and all my web sites were broken. I thought everything was truly hosed. but once I managed to purge apache2, nginx was magically restored, and everything worked. I still have a few minor things to repair that have probably been there for a while. Yes I know, fractint.net is an ancient web site that probably belongs in the Museum of Primordial HTML, if there was such a thing.
