FOTD -- December 14, 2013 (Rating A-6,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yesterday's image is located in the East Valley of a random Mandelbrot set at the eastern edge of the 'fan' of the parent fractal that results when various negative portions of Z^(-1.3) and Z^(-7.6) are mixed on each iteration. Today's image is located near the tip of the main spike of that same M-set. The 16 small oval rings surrounding the central minibrot in the image are typical of fractals with double negative exponents. The raggedness at the edges of the minibrot is a sign that the magnitude is near the limit of precision. Unfortunately for the ratings, the math double-negative trick is well overworked and the sallow coloring does little to improve things. Try as I did to delude myself, I could give neither the art nor the math aspects of the image a rating higher than a 6. The calculation time of 3-1/3 minutes is rather slow, but as always, the web sites are there to bring relief to the impatient. HI, I´m back from my trip and saw that there was a discussion about required log in in order to download from dropbox uploads. I use simple (one way) sharing and log in is NOT neccessary, tested on several other machines, even handy. Log in is offered by Dropbox as they want people to install their siftware, so if you did you probably will have to use a password again. Possible solution is to install Dropbox.. Not a big affair and safe, as far as I lnow, it´s up to you. Cheers, Albrecht

FOTD 13-12-13 (Four Calling Birds [A-8,M-6])

FOTD -- December 13, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Four Calling Birds", the gift given on the 4th of the 12 days of Christmas. The reason for such an unlikely name is that calling birds, whatever they might be, are as rare as actual material fractals. This ambiguity is very strange, since the other 11 gifts, as unlikely as they are to actually be given, are at least easily identifiable. Today's image is not ambiguous. It lies in the parent fractal that results when 4 negative parts of Z^(-1.3) are combined with 0.8 negative part of Z^(-7.6) and (1/C) is added on each iteration. The resulting parent fractal is a typical double negative thing with a north-south string of large bays and a large fractal 'fan' extending to the east. There is a small but prominent Mandelbrot set at the eastern edge of the fan's blade, with a large connected ring extending on east beyond the M-set. Today's scene lies in the East Valley of this M-set. The art rating of an 8 is earned by the very feminine soft but subdued pastel colors of the image. The math rating of a 6 is held down by the familiarity of the math tricks involved. I am sometimes asked where my color palettes come from. The answer is that I create them myself by working with the basic color palettes supplied by the Fractint program, just as an artist creates the colors of his paintings from the color pigments he buys at the art supply shop. The calculation time of 3 minutes borders on slowness, but the time will pass quickly once the lovely pastel shades come into view. Calculation may be avoided as always by checking the web sites. FOTD -- December 12, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's striking image rates an 8, which is a pretty good rating for a fractal that does not exist. The image is a manifestation of a totally evaporated Julia set, consisting of nothing but inside stuff, which if left unchanged, would be a total blank. The Mandelbrot set it comes from is also totally blank inside stuff. The manifestation has nothing to do with the appearance of a religious savior. It appears when the apparently featureless inside stuff is rendered with an active inside fill such as the bof60, which can dredge up something from nothing. The reason for the art rating of an 8 is obvious when the image is seen. The reason for the math rating of an 8 is a bit more subtle, but it assuredly is there. I chose the name "The Rags of Time" because it has a rather poetic sound to it. I can see nothing in the image to justify such a name. The calculation time of a mere 8 seconds can be cut to near 4 seconds by calculating the image with the symmetry set to 'origin'. FOTD 11-12-13 (Fractal Music??? [A-8,M-9])

FOTD -- December 11, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image has an art rating of an excellent 8. The reason is apparent. The math rating however is a superior 9. This rating was earned when I noticed that the scene splits in half horizontally directly through the origin of the tiny minibrot at the center. By itself, this split is not very exciting, but then I noticed that the left and right halves are symmetrical with respect to the split, and that the features of the right half are only half the size of those on the left half. I have never before seen such a thing, which IMO earns the math rating of a 9. The name "Fractal Music???" came about when I noticed the resemblance of the circular elements to a keyboard. The three question marks were added because I have yet to hear any fractal music that sounded like anything more than semi-organized noise. And I doubt that I ever will. (Let me know when a computer running a fractal program writes a listenable symphony or a listenable anything musical.) The calculation time of 40 seconds will pass faster than the minute waltz. FOTD 10-12-13 (Buried Cupcakes [A-8,M-8])

FOTD -- December 10, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene deep within yesterday's parent fractal. It lies near a much larger minibrot near the outer limit of the reddish area extending to the right of the bottom of the parent. This larger minibrot will be revealed if today's image is recalculated with the magnitude reduced to 600 and the logmap reset to zero. Curiously, this larger minibrot is an exact duplicate of the parent fractal. To create today's colors I reused yesterday's palette and spiced it up to add a bit more contrast and reduce the color intensity. A minibrot lies at the center of the image, but unfortunately, it is well out of range of the DOS version of Fractint. The tiny black dot at the center is not the minibrot. It is an open area resulting from an inadequate maxiter. The art aspect rates an excellent 8, or at least in my opinion it does. The math aspect also rates an 8, since the minibrot is unusually attractive for a fractal with an exponent in the range of 1.333. The calculation time of 2-1/3 minutes will pass in a couple flashes once the quality of the final image becomes apparent. This time may be cut to a single flash by calculating the image with the passes set to 'g'. Otherwise, the web sites can make things notably less cumbersome. FOTD -- December 09, 2013 (Rating A-6,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a math special, which explains the math rating of an 8. It is also an entire parent fractal in itself, which explains why the art rating is an unspectacular 6. The entire scene has been rotated minus-90 degrees, for a marginally improved composition. The fractal actually has X-axis symmetry. The real(p2) value of 3.1439495 is not frivolous. It is the critical value at which the fractal does have X-axis symmetry. The value's closeness to the number PI is purely coincidental. The name "Cupcake Quest" refers to the two cupcake shaped buds on either side of the fractal's main bay. These buds and the filaments extending from them probably hold countless minibrots of all degrees of interest, but today is not the day we check for them. The calculation time of 1-1/3 minutes will cause stress for no one. Running a DOS file on some SOTA units can be quite a task however. FOTD -- December 08, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image came about when I took the expression Z^(1.333)+C, calculated it 7 levels up the hyperspiral (hyperladder) with the 'floor' function applied, and checked the resulting fractal. The name of today's FOTD, "Wrapped Around", does not refer to the image itself, but to the parent fractal in which it lies. This parent has been caught in the act of wrapping around the complex logarithmic hyperspiral and slipping off into uncharted higher dimensions. It consists of a large twisted open area with two broken chaotic filaments extending north and west, and a prominent bud on the southeast shore line. Today's scene lies not too far out in the chaotic filament extending to the north. I have not yet checked the bud. The art aspect rates an 8, which is justified because the image is one of the better ones I have found in the exponent range between unity and two. And I really did put extra effort into the coloring. The math aspect rates a 7, with a good part part of the worth lying in the parent fractal, which has been caught spiraling off into another world. The calculation time of 1-1/4 minutes is close to the average time it takes for a fractal to calculate on today's fireball fast but not always DOS capable machines. FOTD -- December 06, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The strange object in today's image is a fractal bay trying to become a quadratic bud in the parent fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.333)+C is iterated 333 levels up the complex logarithmic hyperladder. This parent is a very unimpressive blob, an open area with almost nothing to attract interest. There is a small bay on the southern shore of the open area however, and it is this small bay that appears in today's image. Do not be fooled by the great height of today's scene on the hyperladder. The so-called hyperladder actually more of a hyperspiral, and the images found on it are a recurring periodic series rather than an infinity of ever new and more interesting fractals. The name "Straight and Narrow" does not refer to the difficult path to heaven. It describes the filament extending from the bud, which is filled with small minibrots. (Some of these minibrots might be worth a look.) The artistic worth of an 8 could be just a little inflated; the math worth of a 7 seems right on the mark. FOTD 05-12-13 (On the Superspike [A-7,M-7])

FOTD -- December 05, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a minibrot lying way out near the tip of the main spike of its parent fractal. But this parent is not the Mandelbrot set. It is a Z^(1.333)+C fractal with a spike that puts the spike of the M-set to shame. To begin, the spike is far longer than the M-set's spike, and it also points northwest instead of straight west, with far more fractal detail along its path. With all these superior features, I could consider the spike nothing less than super, which was reason enough to name the image for its location -- "On the Superspike". The parent fractal came about when I calculated the expression Z^(1.333)+C at a height of only one level up the hyperladder (or hyperspiral) with the cosine function applied. I think this is the first time I have applied the cosine function to the MandelbrotBC3 formula, and at today's hyperlevel it produces a rather scrambled parent with little but its one superspike. The image came about as a result of an effort to duplicate the rating of yesterday's image, but the final result was less impressive, rating only a 7 for both art and math worth. The image is a super fast one, finishing in 20 seconds or less on a SOTA (State Of The Art) machine. Even on older units it will finish very fast.
