Fractal Music Project

HI, : after a long time of silence I´m back again with a new project. After my Multifractal Project which has remained unique as it still is the only software creating fractals using up to five formulas simultaneously here is my Fractal Music project, possibly the only one which deserves that name, there are some details they have in common: : It uses a single algorithm to automatically create music of theoretically indefinite size which never repeats itself. The rhythm is my own definition of an endless shifting rhythm originally inspired by Steve Reich ("Drumming") and Terry Riley ("In C") and on their side by African native music for instance by the pygmies. : The melodies- of course being the other half of the structure "shifting melodies" - are created using pixels of a Bitmap (BMP) fractal, which is scanned using the dots and lines of a freely designed IFS fractal. : The basic software - in and out and conversion of a pixel into musical parameters of a single note - originates in the nineties, author David Strohbeen and is not available anymore. : In addition to the image the music is influenced to a high degree by the IFS fractal used, a pyramid for instance creates a harder rhythmic structure, a spiral a softer melodic structure. Listening closely and relaxed you may well find that the general atmosphere of the music is that of the originating fractal. : I converted Jim´s "End of the World" image, FOTD Aug27, loved it at first glance. Thanks for that, Jim. Including links of the WAV files - mp3 is not satisfactory - and the original MID files. Be careful when using Midi: The sound depends on the fonts used and therefore maybe disapointing.The soundfont used is WeedsGM3, google for it. Use only a player that does not change the parameters. FOTD 29-06-14 (A Stray Undekabrot [A-6,M-5])

FOTD -- June 29, 2014 (Rating A-6,M-5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It has been 3 days since the most recent FOTD, but that's the way of it sometimes. After all, fractals are almost the most important things in life, but not the most important. Today's belated image shows an order-11 minibrot lying deep in the chaos on the west side of the north branch of Seahorse Valley of its grossly oversized parent Mandelbrot set. The name "A Stray Undekabrot" confirms this description. I am becoming rather involved in investigating these higher- order fractals and their minibrots, though I have yet to concoct a formula that brings the size of the parent fractal under control in a satisfactory manner. In fact the futile search for a suitable formula is the main reason for the current irregular schedule of the FOTD. I could rate the art no higher than a 6 and the math interest no higher than a 5. The image is still worth a quick look however, at least in my opinion. The calculation time of 3-3/4 minutes is rather slow for an image that rates a measly 6+5. FOTD 26-06-14 (Retrogression [A-7,M-3])

FOTD -- June 26, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-3) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene moderately deep in the southwest branch of the valley enclosing the large period-3 sub-bud on the northwest shore line of the main bud of the Mandelbrot set. The math aspect of the image rates only a 3. After 30 years of exploration, there is little new math stuff to be found in the Mandelbrot set, at least at today's depth of just under 10^(10). The art aspect rates a 7 however. This is in recognition of the modicum of extra effort I put into the colors, which originated with one of the built in color palettes of Fractint. The name "Retrogression" implies a turning back to earlier times, and as far as fractals go, it is hard to turn back to anything earlier than the Mandelbrot set. The most unusual thing in the image is the un-necessarily high maxiter, which causes the solid black background that brings out the underlying patterns. Something extra was needed. In the M-set, unless something special is done, the higher order valleys tend to look more and more alike. The calculation time of one minute is a rough estimate. But regardless of the machine, the wait will be brief. And visiting the web sites can eliminate all waiting. FOTD 24-06-14 (Sin of Commission [A-8,M-5])

FOTD -- June 24, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Sin of Commission", but don't expect any subliminal racy scenes in the image. The name refers to the color intensification of the image, which I did in an outside color program. Since I sometimes consider such superfluous image manipulation to be cheating, I have admitted my sin in the name I gave the image. The questionable manipulation did raise the color rating from a 5 to an 8 however, so maybe my misdeed was not as bad as implied. The math aspect rates a 5 however, and there is no way to raise it. The scene lies deep in East Valley of the large minibrot on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set, an area that has been thoroughly explored at least down to the depth of over 10^14 of today's image. Since arbitrary precision math is necessary at this depth, the image is a slow one, taking around 20 minutes on a SOTA unit. But all is not lost, for the 20 minute wait may be avoided by checking the image on the web sites. FOTD 22-06-14 (Random Messenger [A-5,M-5])

FOTD -- June 22, 2014 (Rating A-5,M-5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's unexceptional image lies in the 'East Valley' of the fractal that results when 0.5 part of Z^2 is subtracted from Z^11. At the center lies a minibrot surrounded by disconnected and distorted elephants. The logmap has been intentionally set too high to create the effect of surrounding darkness. The name "Random Messenger" has nothing to do with the appearance of the image. It refers to my instinctive feeling that there is more information hidden in these fractal patterns than meets the eye. The art and math both rate a 5, which shows that the hidden information remains quite well hidden, at least in today's image. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is around FOTD average -- slow enough to cause a bit of impatience yet fast enough to keep interest high. The image is also available on the web sites.
