Fractal Music Project

HI, : after a long time of silence I´m back again with a new project. After my Multifractal Project which has remained unique as it still is the only software creating fractals using up to five formulas simultaneously here is my Fractal Music project, possibly the only one which deserves that name, there are some details they have in common: : It uses a single algorithm to automatically create music of theoretically indefinite size which never repeats itself. The rhythm is my own definition of an endless shifting rhythm originally inspired by Steve Reich ("Drumming") and Terry Riley ("In C") and on their side by African native music for instance by the pygmies. : The melodies- of course being the other half of the structure "shifting melodies" - are created using pixels of a Bitmap (BMP) fractal, which is scanned using the dots and lines of a freely designed IFS fractal. : The basic software - in and out and conversion of a pixel into musical parameters of a single note - originates in the nineties, author David Strohbeen and is not available anymore. : In addition to the image the music is influenced to a high degree by the IFS fractal used, a pyramid for instance creates a harder rhythmic structure, a spiral a softer melodic structure. Listening closely and relaxed you may well find that the general atmosphere of the music is that of the originating fractal. : I converted Jim´s "End of the World" image, FOTD Aug27, loved it at first glance. Thanks for that, Jim. Including links of the WAV files - mp3 is not satisfactory - and the original MID files. Be careful when using Midi: The sound depends on the fonts used and therefore maybe disapointing.The soundfont used is WeedsGM3, google for it. Use only a player that does not change the parameters. FOTD 30-09-13 (Integral Eyes [A-7,M-6])

FOTD -- September 30, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal scene lies in the Julibrot that results when various portions of (Z), Z^(3), (1/Z) and Z^(2) are mixed together before straight (C) is added on each iteration. This unlikely combination has three initial values of Z that are critical. They are 0.098... -0.105... and -0.473, and all of them produce variations of a single fractal theme. Today's scene lies in the parent Mandeloid that appears when Z is initialized to the first critical value of 0.098... This parent appears as two Mandeloids lying butt to butt along the X-axis. Todays scene lies in the "East Valley" of a large open area on the negative spike extending west from the main bud of the western Mandeloid. The image is filled with the goofy eyes that usually surround minibrots in East Valley areas. But these eyes are much larger and also more decorated than the typical eyes, with a network of strings of smaller eyes throughout the scene. The central minibrot is a bit under-resolved. This is no problem however, since we all know what undistorted quadratic minibrots look like. The lack of full resolution is made up for by a better distribution of the higher-iteration colors. The name "Integral Eyes" might imply more than the image delivers. It came to me out of nowhere, probably from some forgotten sci-fi novel I read many years ago. The art rating of 7 and math rating of 6 make the calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes a bit more than the image is worth. So don't be square. FOTD 29-09-13 (Light in the Night [A-9,M-6])

FOTD -- September 29, 2013 (Rating A-9,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The artistic aspect of today's image rates a superior 9. (Only my humility prevents me from telling that my own effort created the superior coloring that earns the rating.) The math aspect rates merely an FOTD-average 6. The reason is that we have been to this part of the fractal world a few times too many already. The parent fractal is the same one that gave us the most recent FOTD, the one for September 27. Today however we check into the East Valley area of the parent, where we find many groups of small islands just offshore of the main valley, which is really a peninsula. Today's scene is located in one of these groups. I named the image "Light in the Night" because, at least to me, the central minibrot seems to be illuminating the surrounding deep blue elements. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is about FOTD average. But considering the high rating of today's image, it is a pretty good bargain. Visiting the web sites is an even better bargain. So save time and let someone else do the calculating. FOTD 27-09-13 (Bright Busy-Body [A-8,M-6])

FOTD -- September 27, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us back to yesterday's Julibrot though not to yesterday's parent fractal. Today's parent results when yesterday's expression is calculated with Z initialized to the second critical point of the expression, which is 0.225... And like yesterday's parent fractal, today's is also indescribable, though unlike yesterday's it has X-axis symmetry. The closest I can come to describing this parent is to call it part of a Mandelbrot set with its west half mostly covered by debris. Today's scene lies in the northern branch of an apparent Seahorse Valley. I see a lot of East Valley type stuff in it however. The image is unusually brilliant and filled with an incredible amount of detail. This inspired the name "Bright Busy-Body", which does not imply an intelligent old lady who puts her nose into everyone's affairs. The artistic worth of 8 exceeds the math value of 6, while the calculation time of 6 minutes is admittedly excessive. This excessive time is where the web sites will rush to the rescue. FOTD -- September 26, 2013 (Rating A-5,M-?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's unlikely scene came about when I mixed various parts of (1/Z), (Z), (Z^2) and Z^(-0.5) to produce a parent fractal almost beyond description. This quirky mixture has critical points at 0.225... and -0.262... Today's parent is the one that is created when Z is initialized to -0.262... The closest I can come to describing this parent is to say it vaguely resembles half a Mandelbrot set split right across the middle and giving birth to a shapeless blob. Today's scene is located in a valley on the west side of the blob. This parent fractal is indeed critical. This is confirmed by the intact M-set shaped minibrots that lurk in it. But today's image shows open holes of a different sort. These midgets, if they are minibrots at all, are shaped nothing like baby M-sets, they resemble something closer to stone-age arrowheads. And as a few zoom-ins will show, they fill the scene. I named the image "Flying Flinders", though I have no idea what might have just exploded and filled the air with the flinders. The artistic value of the image rates a humble 5. What more could I do for an image with so little going for it. I rated the math aspect at a question mark because the formula has nothing really new in it. But today's arrowhead minibrots are not all the parent has in it. With so many widely varied areas, who knows what might turn up. I'll give the parent a couple more good examinations before trashing it. The calculation time of 3-3/4 minutes is slow because the scene lies rather deep in a valley, and also because the formula is a slow one. Time may be saved by checking the finished image on one of the FOTD web sites. FOTD 24-09-13 ( [A-9,M-7])

FOTD -- September 24, 2013 (Rating A-9,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image was created with a crazy mix of Z, Z^(2), Z^(-10) and Z^(0.5). This unlikely mix creates a parent fractal that is little more than a field of debris shaped roughly like an M-set, with a small minibrot near the origin. Most of the debris lies scattered west of this small minibrot, with today's scene located in the East Valley of an even tinier minibrot far out in the northwest part of the debris field. I named the image "Elephant Carousel" when I saw the eight elephants circling the central minibrot. The coloring came out very well, (If I don't say so myself.), and raises the art rating to a superior 9. The math rating of a 7 is more ordinary. The calculation time lays an egg however. The four minutes required to finish the job drags notably, but this slowdown may be avoided by checking the web sites. FOTD -- September 23, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fancy minibrot lies in the parent fractal that comes about when various portions of Z^(1), Z^(2), Z^(3) and Z^(4) are combined on each iteration when Z has been initialized to the critical point of -2.028... This parent consists of an obviously critical though distorted Mandelbrot set in the normal orientation, with two large lobes sprouting from its East Valley area, pointing northeast and southeast. These extra lobes appear definitely non-critical, but they are surrounded by debris strings, which if searched, reveal curious critical areas. Today's scene lies in a string of this debris near the north end of the northeast lobe. The art rating of an 8 is mostly due to the coloring. It did take a bit of time to work up the color palette and apply it to the image. The math rating of a 7 is average. Nothing really new appears in the image or formula. The name "Holey Whole Holes" is admittedly silly, but before fractals were discovered, was the idea itself of so much from so little not considered silly? FOTD -- September 22, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the oversized monstrosity of a fractal that results when 3.3 negative parts of Z^(-1.3) are combined with 1.3 negative parts of Z^(-3.3) on each iteration before (1/C) is added. This parent fractal is an immense thing, extending far beyond the default screen. It consists of two giant rings surrounded by smaller rings, some connected, some not, with a large Mandelbrot set between the two giant rings. The 0,0 point lies on the western perimeter of the southern ring; today's scene lies on the eastern perimeter of the same ring. I have not yet checked the large Mandelbrot set, though I might do so in a day or so. I have found that these blatant M-sets usually contain mostly typical M-set stuff, and little new stuff, with the really unusual features lying in the least likely places of the parent. The name "Ringworld Fantasy" came about when I found myself pondering other possible worlds. I seem to be entering one of those philosophical spells that come every few years, and the effects are likely to show in the FOTD titles of the next month or so, as well as the closing philosophizing. The artistic rating of a 7 is due mostly to the strong coloring. The math rating of a 6 shows that there is really no new math in the image. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes will pass quickly enough. It will pass even quicker for those who fill the time pondering the meaning of life.
