Can't get it to work

I was using Fractint back in the late 80's. I Just tried to D/L a windows 7 version and unpacked it. I cant find a working exe file. I just get an error message saying it cannot open the file. It tells me it won't work in a 64bit environment. Help Dean

FOTD -- May 03, 2011 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I was recently surprised when Brian found a minibrot in a scene that I had assumed and stated held no minibrots. As is so often the case in the world of fractals, things are not always as they seem. Knowing that minibrots were in the scene even though the (apparently flawed) 'fmod' method had indicated they were not, I made an old-fashioned search by locating areas of 2-way symmetry and zooming into the center. The old-fashioned way soon led to today's minibrot and image. I named the image "Most Unexpected", not because the minibrot was unexpected, but because the round-cornered square is unlike anything I have perviously stumbled upon in a fractal image. The image was given extra excitement by rendering it with the outside set to 'tdis'. When I found an acceptable color palette, the final result rated a lofty 9. Part of the rating expresses my pleasure at finding that there are more minibrots in fractals than I had previously assumed. Of course, since I have always assumed the number of minibrots is infinite, it is hard to explain how that number can be increased. (Almost anything done to infinity equals only more infinity.) FOTD 29-07-11 (Retrogression Track [6])

FOTD -- July 29, 2011 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Sometimes the names of the FOTD images almost take on a life of their own. For some strange reason, the name "Retrogression Track", which came to mind out of nowhere, seems so right that I had no choice but to give this name to the image, even though the name has no logical connection with the image. The image is an evaporated one, which lies in the parent fractal that results when 2.8 negative parts of Z^(-1.8) are combined with 0.2 negative part of Z^(-5.5) and (1/C) is added on each iteration. This parent fractal consists of three large, nearly circular bays surrounded by three even larger irregularly shaped bays. Today's scene lies in an irregular circular ring that terminates a fairly normal filament extending from the southern irregular bay. The rating of a 6 is another in a string of July disappoint- ments. We all enjoy those images that rate an 8 or a 9. Such images are sometimes hard to find however. If they could be found at will, they would no longer be worth a high rating. The calculation time of 5-3/4 minutes is a bit slow for an image that rates merely a 6. FOTD -- July 27, 2011 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image gets no rating because it is not of my own creation. I picked it up quite a few years ago, probably from somewhere on the internet, and found it in my storage bin a couple days ago. The reset=1730 in the parameter file shows that it was created with an older version of Fractint. I named the image "Bad Moon on the Rise". Well, it does show a circle that easily could be a moon rising behind a landscape of who-knows-what. The image was created by the fn(z)+fn(pix) formula, one I almost never even think of using. But since images like today's are possible with this formula, maybe I should think about it a little more. The calculation time of 24 seconds is fast by any standards. FOTD 26-07-11 (Way-Out and Deep [7])

FOTD -- July 26, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a very deep one. It lies on a filament that extends from a larger minibrot that in turn lies on a filament that extends from the fourth bud out the main negative spike of the Mandelbrot set. Even though the M-set has been so thoroughly explored, I still feel that today's image, due mostly to its coloring, is worth a rating of a 7. The name "Way Out and Deep" describes the location of the scene in its parent fractal, the Mandelbrot set, which BTW is pretty much the parent of all fractals. The calculation time of 16-1/2 minutes is within reason, considering the image's magnitude of almost 10^29. But setting up and running DOS parameter files can be quite a chore, so relief has been prepared at: <http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html> where the finished image is posted for instant satisfaction. FOTD 23-07-11 (Shimmering Outflow [6])

FOTD -- July 23, 2011 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent of today's image is an oversized north-south oriented string of large bays, with the largest bay on the south end of the string. This south bay is also the one that at first glance appears to be critical. Today's scene is located in the debris on the northeast shore line of this southern bay. I named the image "Shimmering Outflow". I can see nothing in the image that might justify such a name, but the words have a kind of poetic feeling that gives them validity. The image's rating of a 6 is perhaps a bit conservative, but with a calculation time of a fast 2 minutes, the parameter file will take little time to calculate the image. FOTD 21-07-11 (Reference Standard [6])

FOTD -- July 21, 2011 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's image "Reference Standard" because it illustrates a standard object. Objects resembling the one that fills the frame appear very often in fractals with features of both the Mandelbrot set and the Mandeloids created by a higher power of Z. The higher power in today's image is 31. Objects similar to the one in today's image exist in immense numbers on the filaments extending from the half-morphed large minibrot on the main stem of the parent, which closely resembles a normal Mandelbrot set. Today's image lies on one of these filaments. The rating of a 6 is disappointing, even for me. I guess my excuse is the hot weather here at FC, which makes one think of nothing but taking it easy with a cold drink. But after all, it is midsummer, and laziness is the order of the day. I could probably beat the heat by moving to Patagonia for the summers, but the twice yearly trips could prove quite costly. Relief in the form of fractals is far more cost effective. The calculation time is a fireball 17 seconds -- fast by any standard. FOTD -- July 19, 2011 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is merely an everyday scene in the conventional math range of the overworked Mandelbrot set, yet it rates a lofty 8. This rating is justified because I awarded myself 1-1/2 extra points for the coloring, which occupied a full hour of my limited time. Without the fancy coloring the image would have rated no more than a humdrum 6-1/2. The scene lies in the spiral seahorse-like tail of a tiny period-38 bud on the northwest shore line of the main period-2 bud of the Mandelbrot set. The maxiter of 15000 is a bit too low to fully resolve the large, unusually spectacular minibrot at the center of the image, but it results in the best coloring, so I posted the image slightly under-resolved. The name "Mandelbrot's Pride" is likely true. Mr. Mandelbrot was surely proud of his accomplishment of bringing fractals to the public attention (around the year 1980). But fractals, at least in their Julia aspect, were actually discovered many years earlier by Mr. Julia, who unfortunately had no computers to show the world what he had found. The calculation time of 9 seconds is insignificant when compared to a lengthy human life span of about 3,000,000,000 seconds, so go ahead, run the included parameter file and enjoy the image. You'll never notice the lost time. But at 6pm a noisy thunder-storm moved in, which dropped about 2.5cm of rain and lowered the temperature to 73F 23C. The thunder caused the fractal cats to grow alert, though they did not become alarmed enough to dash for cover. Tuesday began hot and muggy. By midday the temperature reached 90F 32C, which sent the cats once again into hot-weather mode. But a cooling thunder-shower arose around 5pm, which brought them back to life. The humans had reasonably uneventful days, which is the kind of day we enjoy. The sick computer is once again in full health, though with all the viruses out there, no guarantee of continued health can be given. The next FOTD will be posted in 48 hours. Apparently, when my hosting provider moved my site to a new server they failed to move those files. I'd previously fixed a couple of other problems I'd discovered, but I hadn't realized that all those images had not been moved to my new server. I've uploaded the images again and checked the July page (and the end of June) and verified that they all load OK again.
