. If you don't use arbitrary (or some similar extended type) precision math you won't be able to zoom in much deeper than about E+13. That will be a serious limitation (for some people, like me). Anyway, when you get this thing done I may actually have a reason to get a MAC! (haven't touched one in 15 years, I assume they are better now) .

FOTD and two fractals

Had a bit of trouble with the FOTD 09-04-10 Common-Sense_Cubic. Fractint said it couldn't read the coloring information so I used the classic Fractint "blues" map (which comes with the distribution zip) and it looks great. In other news I may have solved the gif to png conversion problem. I used the brute force method of setting up a Flickr account. Hope it works. Oooo look at that fractal its so bright and shiny. FOTD 31-08-10 (Multi-Elephantine [7])

FOTD -- August 31, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us on another trip into the abstract fourth dimension. It is a near-Julia set of the East Valley area of a minibrot located on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set, rather close to the set's main body. The image is not a Julia set, nor is it a Mandelbrot set. It is a hybrid, with both Mandelbrot and Julia characteristics. The outer shape is obviously a Julia set of an East Valley. The brilliant innermost parts however are a very oblique slice of the Mandelbrot aspect of the area. The buds in this brilliant area are purely Mandelbrot buds, though at this extreme angle they are partially obscured. I named the image "Multi-Elephantine" because of an abundance of the beasts hiding throughout the scene, which is chock full of both elephants and bits and pieces of elephants. In today's image however, the ponderous pachyderms are less apparent than they usually appear. The rating of a 7 is far enough above average to make the 6-1/3 minute calculation time worth the wait. The calculation wait may be totally eliminated however by viewing the already-calculated image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Near perfect late summer weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Monday. The day began with fog, but by 9am the sun broke through, and for the rest of the day not a single cloud was seen. The high temperature of 90F 32C was a bit too warm for total comfort in the sun. The dry air made it quite pleasant in the shade however. It's too bad we could not spend the day outside in this perfec- tion. The fractal cats enjoyed their perfection however. They found perfection on the kitchen floor and on their shelf in the sunny window -- while the sun was not there, of course. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- August 30, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the Rectangular (imag(c),imag(z)), orientation of the Z^2+C Julibrot. The scene is located near the -1.416 point of the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. The rating of a 6 is a come-down from the lofty ratings of the past several days, but the image is still worth a look, and the calculation time of just over 2-1/4 minutes will cause little inconvenience. The name "Total Abstraction" refers to the nature of the four- dimensional Julibrot figure, as well as all other 4-D things. The curious thing about this is that when one or two dimensions of the total abstraction are discarded by taking slices, the slices prove to be very real. This abstract stuff becomes quite clear when the image is seen. Matching the palette with outside=fmod coloring produces a scale effect in todays fractal. For a metallic sheen effect I often use outside=atan or decomp. FOTD -- August 28, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the East Valley of a Mandeloid that on the surface is mostly quadratic, but in its depths begins to take on exponent-2.5 tendencies. The central minibrot in today's image has very obvious 2.5 tendencies. Curiously enough, this minibrot is shaped nothing like its parent fractal, which resembles a Mandelbrot set with its main bud squeezed half shut. The rating of an 8 includes a full point for my coloring effort. I tried for a half-hour to make the 8-bit color look like 24-bit, with only mild success. I managed to get the iteration bands subtle enough to be overlooked by those who don't know what the bands are. But in the end I had to face reality -- The bands are still visible. The name "Only Halfway There" could refer to the 2.5 exponent in the generating expression. Or it could indicate that I was only half successful in eliminating the iteration bands. The calculation time of just over 2 minutes will pass in 2.5 flashes. The few small puffy clouds merely added to the perfection. Both fractal cats were more interested in finding the cricket that eluded them yesterday than the outside weather. FL and I think the cricket scurried under the refrigerator, where most likely it will stay, chirping now and then. Otherwise, my day was good enough. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- August 29, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is another pretty good one. The rating of a much- above-average 8 is fully justified, though a full point of the rating is earned by the coloring. The name "The Hidden Jewel" refers to the scene in general. The calculation time of 1 minute is very near FOTD average. On its surface, the parent fractal is a normal Mandelbrot set, but in its depths things start to go awry. Today's image is located near the edge of the main negative spike, at the very un-exceptional point of -1.71. At this point the single spike has fractured into an infinity of fractal spikes, which somewhat resemble the train-tracks in the Enola rail yards, located about 75 miles or 120km south of FC. Absolutely perfect weather continued here at Fractal Central on Saturday. Not the slightest trace of cloud marred the blue sky, while the temperature settled at a near-perfect 82F 28C. The fractal cats gave up on the cricket and spent the day watching for stray cats intruding in their yard. (They seem to think it's their yard, even though we never let them go out there.) This fractal reminds me of both blades of grass and a kind of seaweed I used to see at the beach where I spent my summer vacations during my youth.
