FOTD -- June 11, 2010 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A late FOTD usually means a busy day, and so it was here at FC on Thursday. We have another merely average FOTD fractal. How humiliating! But nobody is perfect, and with no time to find a good fractal, today's image is the best I could do. Basically, the image is a smoothly-colored spiral with most of the frills left out. Perhaps the most interesting part is the series of similarly-shaped holes along the spiral arms. The parent fractal is little more than a large area of chaos, with the remains of one large Mandelbrot set, and minibrots of various shapes and sizes scattered throughout. Today's scene is located in the remains of the East Valley of the large M-set. I rated the image at a 4 and named it "Smooth Nothings". The calculation time of 1-1/3 minutes is brief enough to cause no one to be impatient. The trip to view the finished image at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> is far less work. After Wednesday's all-day rain, near perfect weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Thursday, with partly cloudy skies, low humidity, and a temperature of 84F 29C. The fractal cats sincerely approved all of this. My day was very busy, but otherwise pretty good. The one annoyance was a wet spot that I noticed on the third floor ceiling when I went up there to find some old files. I guess the FC roof needs work. I'll put it on the list of things to be done. FOTD -- June 10, 2010 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With an unexpected rush job suddenly arriving on Thursday, I had little time to devote to fractals. But I did manage to produce an acceptable if not exceptional image, which appears as today's FOTD. The name "Passing the Time" might have some vague connection to the image, but if so, I fail to recognize it. The rating of a 5 indicates that I consider the image to be average. The 7-1/2 minute job of calculating the image may be escaped by viewing the image in finished form on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Heavy clouds and a steady chilly rain kept a damper on things here at Fractal Central. The temperature of 61F 16C was more like April than June, and the fractal cats didn't like it. As stated above, my day was very busy. FOTD 09-06-10 (Beyond the Horizon [7])

FOTD -- June 09, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's formula, the FinDivBrot-2, certainly creates some interesting and unexpected parent fractals -- and it's only 4 lines long. (I have always avoided those overblown formulas with 40 or 50 lines, most of which are devoted to coloring tricks. I much prefer the coloring tricks to come from the fractal math, not the fractal artist.) Today's formula, along with the type=Mandel, MandAutoCritInZ, MandelbrotBC3, and SliceJulibrot4 formulas (formulae) are the ones I turn to almost automatically when I boot the Fractint program. They rarely disappoint me. In today's FOTD, the FinDivBrot-2 formula produced a parent fractal that resembles a Mandelbrot set pretty closely until its main stem is examined. Instead of one main stem, this parent has two main stems, both of them infinitely divided into ever- smaller curled stems. Today's image is located in the East Valley area of the minibrot on the northern main stem. I named the image "Beyond the Horizon" because I did go a bit beyond the limit of perfect definition to find the scene. The rating of a 7 means the image is kind of good, but nothing to get excited about. The calculation time of just under 4 minutes may be avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Another picture perfect day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Tuesday, an exact repeat of Monday. The fractal cats, now convinced that the unwanted intruder cat has moved on, spent most of the day sleeping. My day was busier than Monday, but still left lots of time for fractal diversions. If a Klein bottle is given an extra twist, the result is a surface known as a 'projective plane', which needs a full five dimensions to be seen in its full unsquashed, non-intersecting glory. But don't ask me to describe the shape of this surface. Describing the Klein bottle is hard enough. And unless I'm mistaken, a projective plane may also be created by widening a Mobius strip until the single edge closes on itself to form a single-sided edgeless surface. FOTD 08-06-10 (One Froggy Fractal [7])

FOTD -- June 08, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The Klein bottle comment at the end of a recent FOTD discussion was totally in jest, as are most of my closing comments, with a few exceptions. Since the true Klein bottle is an abstraction, it would hold zero gallons of presumably 3-D water, which itself would be an abstraction in 4-D space. The familiar 3-D Klein-bottle model could hold water, but the water would not be enclosed. It would merely be a puddle sloshing around in a basin of the single- sided surface. The Klein bottle is actually mis-named. It is not at all a bottle with an inside that could be sealed. It is actually a two-dimensional surface with no edges or breaks, which twists in 4-D space in such a manner that its apparent two sides are actually different parts of the one and only side. A way to almost picture the true Klein bottle is to imagine a cylinder like a length of garden hose bent into a circle, with the ends joined to form a donut (torus). All we need to do is find a way to gradually turn the hose inside-out without making cuts, so that halfway around the loop the inside of the hose finds itself on the outside. It's impossible in 3-D space but simple in 4-D space, where the 2-D surface may rotate in place on itself. To see an analog of the problem, take a broad, short rubber band, cut it, twist it, and rejoin the edges so that it forms a flexible Mobius strip. Then squash the strip between two panes of glass in an effort to flatten it into two dimensions. It will become apparent that a true Mobius strip must intersect itself when it is squeezed into its model in 2-D space, just as a 4-D Klein bottle must intersect itself when squeezed into its model in 3-D space. There is also a 'figure-8' model of the Klein bottle, which is less well known but actually a bit closer to the real thing. The FOTD is about fractal geometry and not topolgy. So let's get on to today's 7-rated image. I named today's image "One Froggy Fractal" because of the vague frog-like shape near the center. The whole image is a close up of the area where the two prominent minibrots in yesterday's image almost merge. FOTD 07-06-10 (Midgets Without End [6])

FOTD -- June 07, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a mess! It obviously shows a nest of mini- brots, but of what order is hard to say. My best guess is that the minibrots are of order 1.99, since this is the exponent of Z. When I look closer however, I see things that look more like order 2.5 minibrots, which makes no sense at all. I named the image "Midgets Without End" because the more I searched for minibrots in the image, the more I found. Most of the smaller ones are nothing at all like those in today's image, and appear to be distortions of the classic quadratic Mandelbrot set. The parent fractal is a shrunken thing, so shrunken in fact that it is almost out of sight at the default magnitude of 0.67. But an inzoom will reveal that this parent fractal is quite an inter- esting thing, caught on the verge of flipping left to right. Today's scene is located in a large mass of debris floating in the eastern part of the main bay. The most striking thing in the image may be the character of the scenery surrounding the nest of minibrots. The assorted blobs bring a hint of a third dimension to the image, while the colors give hints of things happening just beneath the surface, especi- ally near the nest of minibrots. The rating of a 6 is a comedown from recent images. The calcu- lation time of a fireball 31 seconds will take most of the sting from the disappointment however. As always, the finished image is available on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Muggy conditions in the morning, with lots of clouds and a few showers, gave way to crystal blue skies, puffy white clouds and brilliant sunshine in the afternoon here at Fractal Central on Sunday. The temperature reached a high of 86F 30C early in the afternoon, then dropped to 70F 21C by sunset. A warning of tor- nadoes on the morning news report proved to be a false alarm when nothing more than a mild rain squall arrived. The fractal cats had a relaxing day, but the relaxation ended in the evening when a stray tomcat leaped onto the outside window sill and started a shouting match with Nicholas, who fought back from inside with vicious growls, hisses, and a thrashing tail that stirred up more wind than the threatened tornadoes. Cassie gave moral support from her resting place on the foot stool, and rewarded Nicholas with an ear washing when he eventually chased the other cat away. My day was average, though I think FL is still bothered that I am not more of an environmentalist. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and do what you think is right.
