FOTD and two fractals

Had a bit of trouble with the FOTD 09-04-10 Common-Sense_Cubic. Fractint said it couldn't read the coloring information so I used the classic Fractint "blues" map (which comes with the distribution zip) and it looks great. In other news I may have solved the gif to png conversion problem. I used the brute force method of setting up a Flickr account. Hope it works. Oooo look at that fractal its so bright and shiny. FOTD 30-04-10 (On the Eastern Front [6])

FOTD -- April 30, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is another scene on the southeast shore line of the main bay of the Mandelbrot set, near East Valley. To view it, either run the included parameter file and see the image in an astonishing 14 seconds, or switch to arbitrary precision math and wait about two hours. The difference in the final image is barely noticeable. There is not much to be said about the image, which lies in a second-order spiral in the chaos on the side of a period-10 bud. This bud lies at the point where the associated radicals just begin to take on an elephant-like appearance. I rendered the image with an artificially large negative logmap to create the flat solid black outer parts. The solid black inner area was created by the coloring. I named the image "On the Eastern Front" because the scene lies in one of the easternmost parts of the M-set. I rated it at a 6 because the M-set is such an overworked fractal. Those without 14 seconds to spare may see the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> A near ideal spring day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Thursday, with cloudless skies, and a temperature of 70F 21C. Only a rather strong wind kept it from being absolutely ideal. The fractal cats enjoyed the outdoor conditions from indoors, where they got into a heated tussle behind the books on the hall shelves and knocked several books onto the floor. Like the weather, my day was fair enough. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. It will be the first FOTD of a new month, so maybe I'll decide on a single theme for the entire month. FOTD 29-04-10 (East-Valley Study [8])

FOTD -- April 29, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With nothing better at hand on Wednesday, I returned to the warhorse (but not stale) Mandelbrot set and checked the south- east shore of the main bay, where I found today's scene in an infinitesimal spiral in a tiny spiral in a small spiral. I named the image "East-Valley Study" even though its location is not quite far enough around to actually lie in East Valley. As expressed in the name, today's image is basically a study in getting smooth coloring with only a measly 256 colors to work with. I think I did rather well, and gave myself a whole point bonus, which adds up to a rating of an 8. The magnitude of the image is well into the range of arbitrary precision math. This makes the image a rather slow one, taking a little over 11 minutes to calculate. As always however, the already-calculated image is posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> where it may be seen instantly and enjoyed at leisure. Conditions remained rather brisk for the season here at Fractal Central on Wednesday, but the sun was strong and the temperature reached a rather pleasant 59F 15C. It was not quite good enough for the fractal cats, who gathered on their window shelf and wondered why the sun, which was so strong outside, was not reach- ing the shelf. When I explained that the angle of the sun was too high, they gave me a puzzled look and went to sleep. My day was satisfactory if not over-productive. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 28-04-10 (Cubic Anticipation [6])

FOTD -- April 28, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image, which shows a cubic minibrot, is interesting, which means I see nothing unusually good in it, yet I want to say something. I could rate it no higher than a 6 because all day Tuesday I had a case of 'fractalist's block'. This strange ailment is much the same as writer's block, where no matter how hard the writer tries, the inspired words simply will not come. With a fractal artist, the inspired images will not come. I worked on the coloring for a full 20 minutes, which is a long time by FOTD standards, and ended up with a color palette no better than the one I started with. In the end, I returned to the original colors and did a bit of tweaking. The parent fractal is a standard Mandelbrot set caught in the act of morphing into a cubic Mandeloid, and doing it without the discontinuities that usually plague the fractals with in-between exponents. Today's image is located on the negative X-axis deep in a valley that splits the cubic bud at that location into two halves The name "Cubic Anticipation" implies great things to come. Un- fortunately, the result falls short of the anticipation. The calculation time of 3-1/4 minutes is a little more than the image is worth, but the result, if not awe-inspiring, will at least be 'interesting'. The interesting image may be found in finished form on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The sky was partly cloudy here at Fractal Central on Tuesday, but the brisk north wind and temperature of 50F 10C made it feel like anything but the end of April. The fractal cats must have agreed. They spent a good part of the day climbing all over the book shelves in the hallway. Nicholas was a little too athletic when he squeezed behind a row of books and knocked them onto the floor, sending me running to see what had happened. For FL and me the day was averagely normal. The minibrot- not merely iconic but iconically iconic. They're everywhere like hidden taxes in a modern economy. Instead of cheerful coloring scheme I aimed for something rather dark and murky. FOTD 27-04-10 (A Hazy Serenity [7.5])

FOTD -- April 27, 2010 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is one of the bluest of all time. Since blue is a serene color and I seem to see a bit of haziness surrounding the brilliant center of the image, I named it "A Hazy Serenity". The parent fractal was created when I subtracted Z^(1.7) from Z^(0.3) and added straight C. This parent appears as a distorted Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees. It has no main spike pointing east but this lack is made up for by an unexpected area of chaos where its East Valley should be, which is on the west side of its main bay. Today's scene is located in a patch of this chaos on the southwest shore line of the main bay. The minibrot at the center is not rotated to the 'normal' orientation, with East Valley on the right side, as are most of the minibrots in the FOTD's. I got lazy. But the minibrot is so tiny that its wrong orientation is hardly noticeable. In addition, the minibrot is somewhat beyond full resolution. The rating of a 7-1/2 includes a 1/2 point bonus for the coloring, which I worked on for almost 30 minutes. The calculation time of just under 3 minutes is a cheap price to pay for the image. The trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> to see the image already completed, costs even less, Heavy clouds, occasional rain and a temperature of only 54F 12C made Monday an unpleasant day here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats were too busy getting into indside trouble to notice the outside conditions. Cassie somehow wrapped herself in a blanket and was unable to get the blanket untangled when she wanted to get out. If we had not heard her calling for help, she might have been stuck there for hours. For me the day was average, and what could make a duller story than that. For FL the day was busy, but I gave moral support. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours, almost by magic. Until then, take care, and look onward toward the vastnesses of the world of fractals.
