FOTD -- March 31, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the Zexpe fractal, which is the fractal created by iterating the expression Z^(e)+C. There is nothing special about the number 'epsilon' when it is applied to fractals. Any other number in the same range would have created the same kind of parent fractal. The same is true of other significant but irrational numbers such as 3.1416... 1.618... and 1.414... These numbers may be of utmost importance in certain other applications, but in the world of fractals they and their kin are just so many more irrational numbers. I named the image "Epsilon For Ever". I was trying to think of a simple way of explaining to FL the significance of the number 'e' when I thought of the name. (The definition of other irra- tional numbers such as PI, the 'golden ratio' and the square root of two is easy to explain, but saying that Epsilon is the base of the natural logarithm begs the question of why this particular irrational number was chosen or even needed when the whole number 10 is far more intuitive and works just as well as a logarithmic base. (Or does it?) 'Epsilon' will remain forever mysterious, but today's image is no mystery. It is located in the chaos on the western side of the main bay of the parent Zexpe fractal. The image actually inherits a bit too much of this chaos. In fact, it inherits so much that it lacks a coherent theme, which is why I could give it a rating no higher than a 6. FOTD -- March 30, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The expression behind today's image combines 1.5 negative parts of Z^(-0.75) with 0.4 negative part of Z^(1.4), then adds straight C. The parent fractal consists of an oblong main bay with sharp Mandelbrot characteristics only on its east side and patches of chaos scattered about its inside. The whole fractal has filaments sprouting from it, with exceptionally large minibrots on the two most prominent filaments, which sprout from the northwest and southwest sides of the main bay. Today's image is located in a vague 'elephant trunk' in the East Valley area of the southwest minibrot. The rating of a 7 means the image is comfortably within the range worthy of being declared FOTD. The name "Emerald Enterprise" refers to the emerald colors, which to me actually appear a bit washed out. The rather slow calculation time of 13-1/2 minutes may be bypassed by tripping out to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> and viewing the image in all its subdued glory there. The dry but cloudy skies here at Fractal Central on Monday held enough bright patches to make the day not too unpleasant. The temperature of 59F 15C kept things reasonably comfortable. The fractal cats, who enjoy comfort, spent the afternoon on their shelf, waiting for the full sun to break through. It never did. My day was totally average. FOTD -- March 29, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's discussion will be short. Why? This evening I'm simply not in the mood to write. Maybe it's a minor case of writer's block. The image, for what it's worth, is a scene in a filament extend- ing from the Seahorse Valley area of the large minibrot on the main stem of the very large minibrot on the main stem of the even larger Mandelbrot set. The rating of a 6 guarantees at least a bit of satisfaction. The name "On the Run" means little or nothing. The calculation time of 9/10 of one second is an estimate. Actually, the image, which is faster than light, finishes before the screen can switch to VESA super-VGA mode. FOTD -- March 28, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: An unexpected antiquing expedition did happen on Saturday, but it was a relatively short trip that took little time from the fractal business. The fractal search itself was a very short one. To create the parent fractal I combined 2 negative parts of Z^(0.75) with 2 negative parts of Z^(-0.75). The resulting parent fractal resembles nothing as much as a potato lying on its side with 2 huge ears gracing its top and bottom. Today's scene lies on the north shore of the main bay, and not in either of the ears. Actually, the image is another blast from the past, virtually unchanged. I'll not reveal the date of its earlier appearance, because I forgot to make a note of it. I named today's image "On the Spot" because it needed a name. The name has nothing to do with the actual appearance of the image. The rating of a 7 is what I think the image is worth. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is about FOTD average. Calculation may be avoided entirely by viewing the already- calculated, finished image in the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The sun was strong here at Fractal Central on Friday, but the day began with a temperature of 23F -5C and rose only to 46F +8C in the afternoon. FOTD -- March 25, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a near-Julia set of the valley leading to the period-3 bud on the northeast shore line of the (-Z)^(1.5)+C Mandeloid. The valley itself, or a tiny blown-up part of it, is visible as the fuzzy, light blue, gently curved wedge in the background. The image rates a 6 because of the curious things going on with the 3-armed spirals in he upper part of the image.
