Folks, Fractint version 20.04 patch 10 is now available on the developer's web site: http://www.fractint.net or http://www.fractint.org What's new: Fixed WinFract resetting palette when parameters are changed with the <X>, <Y>, <Z>, or <G> screens. Fixed usage of shift and control keys in Xfractint. Added sanity checks in Xfractint parser functions. Fixed long standing bug in Xfractint that occurred when a PAR was invoked from the command line. Increased the WinFract maximum image size to 4096x4096 pixels. Your mileage may vary depending upon how much memory Windows can allocate. But remember that above 2048x2048 passes=1 is forced. Fixed bug in the cvtcentermagbf() routine that was introduced some time prior to version 19.6. This fixes the problem that was occurring when rotating ap math images by 90 degrees. Fixed buffer overflow in Xfractint that occurred when changing directories. Jonathan

FOTD -- October 17, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: This FOTD is late because I spent too much time on Saturday involved in pondering. I see on the list that Mr. Mandelbrot has moved on to whatever comes after this life for mathematicians. As far as I observed, his passing was little noted in the general news, which as always, seems more concerned with political polls and the con- trived adventures of the current pop celebrities. My thoughts about the event are that if I had designed mankind, I would have given him a few more, no a lot more, prime-of-life years on earth. I have always grumbled that we don't learn how to properly live life on earth until it's too late to benefit from what we have learned. All we can do is try to pass on to our children what we have learned. But what a waste of effort. Today's middling fractal is another one that rates a 7. It's actually an image of an order-7 minibrot in the vicinity of an anti-minibrot. I named it "Flower of Fertility". Who knows why. And I rated it at a 7 because that's what I consider it to be worth. The calculation time of 30 seconds is so brief that even if the result is disappointing, it will have almost been worth the effort. Today's post marks the passing of Benoit Mandelbrot, father of fractal geometry. As a tribute to Benoit Mandelbrot's contribution to the field of fractal geometry today's fractal image is of the default original Mandelbrot set. The plotting does not use the usual inside and outside mappings but rather uses the distance estimator method with a two color map. This plotting method was chosen because I find it enhances the demonstration of the complexity of the basic Mandelbrot set. According to the Fractint manual "The distance estimator method widens very thin "strands" which are part of the "inside" of the set. Here is a fractal I have been using to test improvements to Fracton's 3D Model Export. I switched from a grid based approach to a more sophisticated algorithm that searches for the edges of the fractal. FOTD 16-10-10 (Time to Trap a Fly [7])

FOTD -- October 16, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a ghost of its former self. Actually, it's an evaporated scene in the parent fractal that results when various portions of Z^(-1.4) and Z^(-4.1) are mixed and (1/C) is added on each iteration. The color section of the parameter file is so short because the image uses only 43 colors, but those 43 do the work of a full 255. The active inside fill of 'bof60', is a rather unusual one for me to use. The name "Time to Trap a Fly" came about when something in the image reminded me of a Venus Fly-trap plant. The rating of a 7 makes running the parameter file worth the 2 minutes required to finish. FOTD 15-10-10 (Dancing Lepidoptera [7])

FOTD -- October 15, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Once today's image is viewed, the reason for the name "Dancing Lepidoptera" will be obvious. The rating of a 7 is right on the mark. And btw, a lepidoptera is a butterfly. The scene is located in the remains of the northern branch of Seahorse Valley of the decaying large minibrot on the main stem of the parent fractal. This parent is a Mandelbrot set on its surface, but in its depths, it becomes an order-7 Mandeloid. I particularly enjoy the seven totally-separated butterfly-like elements surrounding the central near-perfect order-7 minibrot. The calculation time of 8 seconds is no mistake. The image actually does finish in this brief time span. Of course, setting up this letter as a parameter file for calculation is a minor hassle, but this hassle may be avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Thursday was a most unpleasant day here at Fractal Central. The day began with fog. By 10am a chilly rain had set in, which continued off and on, mostly on, through the day, while the temperature hovered around 48F 9C. The fractal cats avoided the unpleasantness by spending the day near the heat and eating an extra treat of tuna and cheddar. Except for the routine things that pass every day without notice, my day was uneventful. FL kept busy writing a word- search puzzle. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.
