FOTD -- June 18, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I have been wondering lately why I consider fractal spirals to be boring merely because there are so many of them, while never becoming bored with the almost constant flow of minibrot scenes I post in the FOTD. I guess beauty, as always, exists in the eye of the beholder. Today's venture into Seahorse Valley takes us into the valley of an oversized Mandelbrot set that is quadratic on the surface but cubic in its depths. The imaginary value of 0.0588... might not seem too deep, but the parent fractal is ten times the size of the classic Mandelbrot set, so the things we find here are more typical of the things at a depth of 0.00588... in the classic M-set. The expected peanut holes are there, though they are shaped more like circular disks than peanuts, and have three lobes rather than four. The minibrot at the center is pure cubic, but with a series of 2,6,18... elements surrounding it, rather than the expected 3,9,27... The rating of a 6 is all I could do for the image, since I could find nothing really exceptional about it. Also, the very slow calculation time of 1-1/3 hours, which is due to the overall unusually high iteration count, makes the calculation pretty much a computerized chore. The clouds not only hung tough all day here at Fractal Central on Wednesday, but rain also fell all day, and the temperature never topped a very un-summery 61F 16C. The fractal cats liked this not at all, and showed their displeasure by squatting down and sulking in the middle of the hallway, where they had to be stepped over and could not possibly be un-noticed. FOTD -- June 17, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To begin today's discussion I must state that I do not have a calendar filled with fractal spirals hanging over the desk here at F.C. I have a calendar of photographs taken by the space telescope. This month's photograph shows the star-forming region LH 95 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. However, the photo- graph resembles many fractals I have seen during my 20 years in Fractal Land. The truth is that there has never been a fractal calendar hang- ing anywhere in F.C. The calendar themes of F.C. are astronomy, weather, flowers and new-age stuff. It should be no secret which themes I choose and which FL chooses. BTW, I find nothing wrong with fractal spirals, there are simply so many of them that they do not strike me as unusual. I have also often wondered what lies at the point -0.75 of the Mandelbrot set. What would we find there if we had a computer of infinite speed, which would give infinite magnification? I suspect that, at the -0.75 point, Seahorse Valley is kind of a singularity with a width of zero, which means that even infinite magnification would leave it with zero width. But a departure of an infinitesimal value in the imaginary direction would introduce an infinitesimal but real width, which an infinitely fast machine would calculate and magnify to any degree in an instant. Since infinitely fast machines will always exist only in fantasy land, we will never know what we would find at imag(zero), though I suspect the trip would be like trying to reach the number 2 through the series (1)+(1/2)+(1/4)+(1/8). . . We would keep getting closer but always slowing down, only to find it was impossible to reach the goal. Today's image, with its dark background and sparkles of light, somewhat resembles aa astronomical scene. Actually, it's a scene deep in the Seahorse Valley of the (-Z)^(2.5)+C Mandeloid. I rated it at a 7 because I kind of like it. And the calculation time of 5-1/4 minutes is more reasonable than the hours-long time of some recent images, and a few yet to come. Heavy low clouds hung tough over Fractal Central on Tuesday, but it stayed dry and the fractal cats enjoyed things well enough. . OK, here are my benchmarks. For FOTD June 12, 2009, Seahorse Valley 12, rendered at 640x480. P3-933 system running naked DOS: 45 min 45 sec Athlon-64 dual core running in a WinXPME command shell: 25 min 15 sec Athlon-64 dual core booted with DOS-7 CD: 23 min 37 sec Gateway P4-3GHz dual core running in a WinXP command shell: 1 hr 25 min Athlon chips have long been known to gamers to be superior to Intel, that means better FPM units I think, and that should also mean better for fractals. Notice the extreme difference between my P4 and Athlon systems. The Athlon is 1 GHz, and the P4 is 3 GHz !!! Go figure. FOTD 16-06-09 (Seahorse Valley-16 [7])

FOTD -- June 16, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Start with the number 5, extract the square root, add 1 to this root and divide the sum by 2. The result is the golden ratio, 1.618, where (a) is to (b) as (b) is to (a+b). Also, the reciprocal of 1.618 equals 1.618 minus 1, and all of this is curiously important in making fractals. Since this is Seahorse Valley month, I decided to see what goes on in the Seahorse Valley of the Z^1.618+C Mandeloid. The first thing I discovered is that this Mandeloid has no Seahorse Valley, but my disappointment did not last long, for the (-Z)^1.618+C Mandeloid, which is far more interesting, has a very well developed Seahorse Valley. In today's image we explore quite deep into this valley, where the going is very slow, but the rewards for the patient fractalist, very great. Due to a lack of time, today's image just scratches the surface of this part of the valley. In that scratch however I found a minibrot resembling a large ant swimming in elements resembling scalloped potato slices. Most of the detail in the potato slices was achieved by rendering the image with the outside set to 'tdis'. The rating of a 7 does not quite justify the calculation time of over an hour. I recommend saving an hour of so of precious time by going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the finished image posted there. Monday proved to be a repeat perfect day here at Fractal Central, with the thunder clouds again remaining far to the northeast. The crystal blue skies, puffy clouds overhead and temperature of 81F 27C made the fractal cats very happy. My day was average, which is the average situation. Tuesday will likely be average again, which is also average. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours, and this also is average. . Hey Roger - Send me the PAR or coordinates for the image you are testing, I will try it on my P3-933 and Athlon-64 Alienware systems. They are both screamers. I suspect you are having the same problem many do, you may have a blazing fast system (hardware) but there are many layers of hardware (and software!) translation to muddle thru when running old 8-16 bit programs on current systems, with WinXP or Vista, it kinda defeats the purpose of it all. .

I'd like to hear professional commentary) If this (my theory) is true then there is a singularity. However, right next to the singularity there is all sorts of activity going on. It doesn't eventually go down to a triangle point or anything. This is very strange to think about. I suppose a sort of event horizon might be the place where the most powerful computer in the universe could still not resolve anything smaller. I have a trial version of UltraFractal (eeek!). When I upped the iteration limit on that my processor overheated, alarms and stuff. But when I upped the iteration limit in xfractint the processor was quite safe. I was looking up in some plain old fluffy cumulus clouds on a nice day and out of nowhere a vortex formed. Some clouds swirled around it for about a minute forming a sort of tunnel. I had never before or since seen such a thing happen. I was going to choose swirlingvortex but someone already had that on yahoo. I have seen true funnel clouds but no actual tornado. If I ever see one I want to be somewhere else when I do (not from my porch). I did see a waterspout which lasted at least 15 minutes out on the Atlantic coast. It was there so long a speed boater went to it and started going all the way around, circling the base of it. Wild. Roger

. These are all interesting images, but the one "seahorse valley -05" looks like an image very deep down in the trench between the 2 main bulbs of the mandelbrot. I have been fascinated by this region forever, and it is VERY difficult to get down there. The "peanuts" look that way because they are not resolved - higher iterations are needed and deep enough, even fractint's max 2.1e9 iterations ain't enough. But if you zoom out from it it is not a mandelbrot. Interesting. Check out my post on the UFVP page "where no man has gone before". .

FOTD -- June 15, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today we find ourselves still trapped in the Seahorse Valley complex, longing for some fresh scenery to enjoy, but with half a month yet to go before we escape from the four-dimensional trap. Today's image is a zoom into the stripe at the bottom edge of yesterday's image. We have raised the maxiter to 125,000 and given the stripe quite a bit of stretching in the vertical direction to make sense of it. Without the stretching, today's scene would be a single horizontal line across the screen. In my opinion, the sinuous hairline tendrils are the most interesting feature of the scene. At other angles such as the Mandelbrot and Julia, these tendrils form infinitely deep spirals, though nothing at all of a spiral nature is visible in today's image. (Actually, I consider fractal spirals to be over-rated and grossly over-represented.) I rated today's image at a 6, none of which is due to the bland coloring. And don't be shocked at the calculation time of an hour plus 20 minutes. Eliminate the calculation by hurrying to the FOTD web site instead, where the image is or soon will be posted. Only thing is the "bulbs" get smaller relative to the width of the trench, but they all look the same - it even gets alittle boring. This is what I used to get down there - I kept diving south with maximum iterations till the trench walls did not resolve any more, then zoomed in to that point.
