FOTD -- October 24, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to a lack of time, today's FOTD is dated October 24 and the discussion is brief. No FOTD exists for October 23, which is no loss, since there never was one. Today's unusually colorful and festive image speaks for itself, so no words are necessary. In my opinion, the rating of an 8 is honest. The name "Forever Onward" refers to the endless nature of the fractal depths. The calculation time of X-1/X minutes may be avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> BTW, plans are being discussed for a FOTD fractal and business web site, though things are going slowly so far. Stay tuned. With ample sunshine and a temperature of 73F 23C, Thursday was a day to be remembered here at Fractal Central. When the sun went behind the trees, the fractal cats remembered that the time for their treats had arrived. Friday brought more clouds, more wind but a continued mild temperature of 66F 19C. FOTD -- October 21, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Star in the Night". The image is a good example of a curious fractal phenomenon known as anti-bifurca- tion, where instead of converging toward an area of infinite iterations and bifurcating as it converges, the fractal flow diverges from a point of low iteration and bifurcates as it diverges. The low point of divergence appears near the center of the frame, appearing as a brilliant star in the deep blue surrounding night But despite its mathematical interest, the image makes only an average artistic impression, which holds the rating to an average 6. The calculation time of a speedy 1-3/4 minutes should try the patience of no one. In addition, the finished image is posted for all it is worth on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> With total sunshine and a temperature of 68F 20C, Tuesday was a day to be remembered here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats remembered it for at least 2 seconds when meal time came. My work day was rather busy, but I got FL to help a little. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- October 20, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image is a Mandelbrot set with cubic characteristics in its depths, and today's image lies quite deep indeed. The scene is located in one of the east- style valleys of a larger cubic minibrot on a filament extending from the large northern bud of the parent M-set. Since I rather like the color scheme, I rated the image at a 7. The name "Mystic Conspiracy" refers to the unfinished pyramidal shape surrounding the minibrot. Some would have us believe that such a shape, especially with the all-seeing eye hovering above it, is a symbol of a conspiracy to take over the world. I think the conspirators are supposed to have been plotting the takeover for over a thousand years, and the plot might even involve space aliens. If so, the aliens must be pretty inept. The calculation time of 6-1/4 minutes is a bit slow. FOTD -- October 18, 2009 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Little can be said about today's image, which must be seen to be believed. Unmatched in its extravagance, it is truly an image, that speaks for itself. The parent fractal also must be seen to be believed. The most incredible part of this Mandelbrot set parent is that only half of it is there. The western half has moved on to a higher dimension, and has been replaced by a field of scattered stars and planets. Today's image is located just beyond the large period-5 bud on the northwest shore line of the main bay of the parent half-M-set, almost exactly on the line where the M-set is vanishing. It is located a curious area of chaos in the East Valley of a larger minibrot. There is so much of interest in the image that I failed to find a single theme in it that might inspire a name. I finally named it "Simply Outstanding", which says it all. Actually, the colors of the image are a bit too disorganized to earn a top rating. The rating of 8-1/2 is high enough however. The chief drawback is the calculation time of over 22 minutes, though this time may be cut to a minute or so by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> But due to the odd hour of this posting, give Paul a chance to get it posted on the site. Heavy clouds and a steady cold rain mixed with a few snowflakes left Saturday a day with much to be desired here at Fractal Central. FOTD -- October 19, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With an unexpected improvement in the weather, an unexpected antiquing trip erupted on Sunday, which was yesterday, and explains the lateness of today's FOTD. The image pictures a simple cubic minibrot with some not-so- typical surroundings. The parent fractal is a Mandelbrot set slightly stretched in the north-south direction on its west side. Today's scene is located in a rather shallow part of East Valley. I named the image "Cubical Quadratic" because it contains elements of both types of fractals. Then I rated it at a 6, which is a fair rating. The calculation time of 3-1/2 minutes is well within reason except for those who simply find nothing of interest in fractals, but those few will not be calculating the image to begin with. . Hey Jim - that certainly IS a fractal! Although the esthetic / artistic impression is not extreme, it definitely illustrates what a fractal is - endless repetition and self similarity. I have never seen one like this - awesome! Zooming OUT creates a finer and finer patchwork which seems to stop at around E-005, and you cant zoom out further than that for some reason I dont know. Zooming IN looks like a normal mandelbrot, but squashed a bit along the IMAG axis. A zoom animation may not be spectacular, but I will investigate. Maybe a morph - I will see. .

FOTD -- October 13, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Late fractal alert! New Formula Alert! No, this is not how the bathroom wall here at Fractal Central is decorated, but some fractal fanatic somewhere might find it interesting. As for me, I prefer the old-fashioned plain square tiles. I'm not sure whether today's image is a fractal or not. I came up with the formula while noodling around with some old formulas in one of my overstuffed and forgotten formula files. With four changeable functions, this formula creates an apparently limit- less variety of fractal tessellations of any chosen point of the Mandelbrot set. In today's image I chose the large minibrot on the main stem, which appears, shining brilliantly, at the tile intersections. The formula name "TileWall" is also the name of the image, and this well might be the only time I use this particular formula. The reason for the name is apparent once the image is seen. Since I'm not even sure the image is a fractal, I could give it no rating. The calculation time of 1 second is ceratinly one of the briefest of all time. The trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> will not be quite as fast, but it will be more fun. Heavy clouds and a chilly temperature of 50F 10C put a damper on all outdoor activity here at Fractal Central on Monday. The fractal cats slept through most of it, doing all their sulking in their dreams. Otherwise my day was average. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- October 18, 2009 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Little can be said about today's image, which must be seen to be believed. Unmatched in its extravagance, it is truly an image, that speaks for itself. The parent fractal also must be seen to be believed. The most incredible part of this Mandelbrot set parent is that only half of it is there. The western half has moved on to a higher dimension, and has been replaced by a field of scattered stars and planets. Today's image is located just beyond the large period-5 bud on the northwest shore line of the main bay of the parent half-M-set, almost exactly on the line where the M-set is vanishing. It is located a curious area of chaos in the East Valley of a larger minibrot. There is so much of interest in the image that I failed to find a single theme in it that might inspire a name. I finally named it "Simply Outstanding", which says it all. Actually, the colors of the image are a bit too disorganized to earn a top rating. The rating of 8-1/2 is high enough however. The chief drawback is the calculation time of over 22 minutes, though this time may be cut to a minute or so by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> But due to the odd hour of this posting, give Paul a chance to get it posted on the site. Heavy clouds and a steady cold rain mixed with a few snowflakes left Saturday a day with much to be desired here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats were so disgusted that they passed most of the day squatted down and sulking. Except for the better-than-expected fractal, my day was uneventful. FOTD -- October 17, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Another very busy day here at FC left little time for a proper fractal discussion. The image shows an order-7 minibrot very deep in the East Valley of its parent fractal, which is the familiar Mandelbrot set. The rating of a 6 reflects my dis-satisfaction with the colors, which strike me as far too gaudy, with no obvious unifying theme. The name "Everyday Fractal" shows that the image is typical of those I often pass by on the way to the real image of the day. The calculation time of 6-2/3 minutes is on the slow side, so why not view the finished image, which is posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A mixture of cold rain and wet snow fell all day here at Fractal Central, making the fractal cats very unhappy. FOTD -- October 16, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in yesterday's image. And that's about all I have to say about it. The image is perhaps a bit more colorful than usual, but nothing more than just a bit above a rating of average. The name "Much of Nothing" is an oxymoron that has absolutely no meaning beyond the sound of the words. A most unpleasant day prevailed with the weather as well here at Fractal central on Thursday, as a sloppy mixture of rain and snow fell all day, while the temperature hovered just above free- zing. The fractal cats watched the flakes fall past the window for a while, then retired to their cozy places near the heat. My work day was average.
